I hear this often, but so far people see me as much more friendly and trustworthy when I have my kids with me. I've taken nibblings and friend's kids to the store and have never had even the slightest negative reaction. Maybe you just look shady? Kids are awesome. I just taught my little guy how to shop vac and got to watch him clean off a work bench. Then I let him drill a few holes on the drill press, that's always fun. This isn't foolproof. Married or not she would get child support. The courts would rather bleed you dry than give you full custody unless she was an amazingly unfit parent. I believe courts have also awarded spousal support/alamony for common law marriages, but I'll have to do some more searching for that.

The biggest reason we married is because if something happened where one of us died, we did not want my wife's family to get custody. Marriage was the best way to ensure this. Also, providing insurance to your spouse. (Sometimes) tax breaks, and I think an easier time with transferring property at death. Marriage can actually be pretty good, its divorce that fucks most men. Not always though, on paper I would benefit more if we divorced. We don't plan on testing that though.

That's one of the reasons the hospitals like to have a support person with the mother. It is helpful to have someone to help make decisions, and to stay with the baby if it needs to go somewhere. However, a child has a lot more future potential compared to an older man, and probably would not last as long if dumped into the ocean.
