Let's not resort to ad hominem attacks, not much of a point imo (and feel free to look into my background if you truly think I don't read) In this case I think whether or not someone is alpha depends on the context -- in the SV power circles being a masculine SWeng at a big startup is basically meaningless, whereas to the 20something piece of tail intern it probably does make someone stand out.

if there's enough interest sure. obviously i'm not gonna disclose which company it is given that SV is pretty bluepill overall have a lot of respect for deepmind, they're pretty much the best AI lab in the world right now (though I think my co might overtake them in the next couple years in a few verticals). Have not heard much about Calico though I do know the best ML folks are not heading there.

Yeah this is right. The best way to get these folks' attention is to become the best in the world at something then tell them you want to pivot into an area where they could provide guidance in. I don't really see this failing unless you try talking to Zuck or Musk -- they're legitimately too busy and have plenty of these guys already clamoring for their attention.

All of those schools are fucking terrible, so you should've probably worked harder on your grades. That said, your best bet is gonna be UMD college park so you can hit up Washington DC easily. The other places are in the middle of goddamn nowhere. Unless the Cal State you'd be going to is close to LA - in that case that would also be fine.

I think /u/GoActuallyReadRolloT is just a low status guy and pulls the dregs of that age range. I agree with you - there are several social circles (high-powered academia, tech, finance) where I'd take the decisionmaking ability of the 10th percentile of women over the 90th percentile of guys on this sub.

Yes I do this to plates regularly - they dish out excuse after excuse as to why they aren't progressing in life, why they can't keep a man, why they've cheated in the past, quit a job, dropped out of school, are in debt etc. These women are low quality and the problem is really with you for not being able to pull better. Stop theorizing about their shortcomings and work on improving yours.

this is a really foolish application of that theorem, because in real life women can certainly revisit candidates once they've chosen one (= divorce). the theorem isn't even saying anything all that interesting. if i give you n things, and you look at 1/3 of them (a huge fraction), then yeah, if you take the best after that you're probably going to get something very close to the top - the chance that you get something below the top k is (2/3)k which decreases exponentially in k.

/u/jedruch is right - the convex return comes when you're trying to get past the 80th percentile and make it to the 99.9th. In winner-take-all markets, like the modern sexual marketplace and software, the 99.9th percentile outcome is orders of magnitude better than the 80th, so the return on effort is much higher.

I don't know whether your observation is more than just anecdata. If it is true, to understand why, just think of the incentives. If you're a dude - you either want to hang out with one or more of your guy friends and talk about interesting shit that matters. Don't waste your time on this - go for chicks that make it easier for you. Right now if your SMV is not that high they might be 6 or 7s, but as you start kicking more ass it'll be 8s and 9s. It's not worth spending lots of time going for the 8s and 9s now - the EV on that is lower than improving yourself (career-wise and socially). As an example - instead of clubs, hit up sports leagues, yoga, poetry readings, etc. Find the niche where the pussy comes easy and you'll be in good shape.
