I mean, at this point you are fully separated. The marriage is well and truly over. You dating somebody new would not be “a betrayal” or “cheating.” However, you are almost certainly not emotionally/psychologically healed enough to start building any kind of actually-healthy new relationship. That’s going to take time, pure and simple. There’s no shortcut around that. People naturally fall into codependent patterns when they are in stable, long-term relationships. We mentally and emotionally get…

She can’t make you leave the house. You shouldn’t do it, because then her lawyers can make a claim for you abandoning the marital home, which will make things harder for you. Unless you cheated on her, in which case, you should absolutely leave.

Why the hell are you communicating with her sister!? Radio silence is 100% the correct play here.

This is an area in which it’s absolutely worth spending the lawyer money if she digs her heels in. If you agree to her terms, even temporarily, that will be taken as tacit acceptance down the road.

This, act on this NOW. You’ve received a rare gift that most of us are not afforded. If you wait until she’s established herself, she will be trying to move your kids to Colorado; she’ll almost certainly succeed; your time with them will be relegated to something like a week every summer and every other Christmas break or something like that; and your child support payments will be astronomical, since she’ll be the parent with “primary custody.” You’ll lose your relationship with your kids and p…

Yeah, I agree about the kids, honestly. But even so, it was demonstrably still the Wrong Choice to marry her. Of course good things can come out of a bad situation, though.

I’ve always taken it as “sorry you wasted such a big chunk of your life on a narcissistic cheater.” Like, I’m sure as hell not sorry I got divorced, but I’m sorry that I didn’t recognize her for what she was sooner, I’m sorry I married her in the first place and I’m sorry about the devastation she caused to me, our kids, our friends and everyone else impacted by her insane antics.

Betrayal trauma, which is absolutely a symptom of being cheated on, is one of the most painful, difficult things a person can ever go through in their life. The most important thing to get you through the next couple years is a strong support system. Friends, family, therapist, support group, whoever you know you can get support from when you need it. Talk to the friends and family you trust the most, level with them about what you’re going through, ask if they’d be willing to take the odd call …

These are about the fairest divorce & custody terms I’ve ever seen in my life. Fairer, by far, than any cheater is entitled to. Stick by this to the letter. Keep in mind, also, that you giving “extra” to her, over the amount agreed upon, could be construed as you willingly giving up those rights, and she would no longer have to abide by that part of the agreement (it would depend on a lot of factors, including the temperament of the judge making a decision like that). If you stick to this (again…

I’m almost five years out and still quite happy with just casual encounters. Have not felt the urge to start a dedicated new relationship again. fwiw, my marriage ended with my ex having affairs with two of my (at the time) “closest friends” in a five year period (first affair, five years of “reconciliation,” second affair, divorce), so I suppose it’s possible that it’s due to some amount of emotional scarring, but at the same time… I feel the mentally healthiest I’ve ever felt in my adult life.…

When you cheat, you’re not only betraying your partner. It’s also a betrayal of your children (and often a betrayal of friends and other members of your community as well). Mentally healthy people don’t cheat. So naturally someone who does cheat is going to do whatever mental gymnastics they need to protect their fragile sense of reality and convince themselves that what they’ve done was acceptable and not monstrous. This means that almost all cheaters (with kids) are deeply in denial about the …

It honestly doesn’t need to be working out. What you need is to find something that you can pour yourself into and be proud of the progress you’re making. It could be learning a new language, playing music, drawing, playing a sport in a local league, writing a book, working in a local theatre, playing some game like Magic or Warhammer competitively, hiking or outdoorsmanship, learning a new skill or trade… anything, really. Anything you can pour your time and energy into and then feel good about…

Obviously I’m not friends with either of them anymore. One was just a douche. He was also apparently secretly sleeping my with ex-wife’s best friend while the affair was going on, so just a huge piece of shit. The other one was an alcoholic with actual literal brain damage (a traumatic brain injury from a bad fall, missing pieces of his skull), and he’s dead now anyway 🤷🏻‍♂️ After all of that, I spent a couple years reassessing the types of friends I wanted in my life.

I am not certain I ever truly knew my ex-wife, but I certainly fell in love with the version of herself that she presented to me. Eventually she had affairs with two of my closest friends, and then moved three hours away with our sudden so that I have a weekly six-hour commute to pick them up. Whatever be she “actually” is, at this point, she’s not the woman I loved. That woman is dead, if she ever actually existed at all.

My ex wife and I agreed we’d wait for new partners until the divorce was finalized. Three months later, she was pregnant. From a homeless dude. Who turned out to have a warrant out for violating his probation. Which he had after his sentence conviction, which was for being a pedo.

I regret mine—despite having children I love with my whole heart—but in my case my regret specifically comes from marrying a disgusting cheating whore. If you’re going to divorce, best to do it right away, rip the band-aid off. Understand that it will likely put a huge strain on your relationships with your family and any friends you still have from your “traditional background,” but if you truly think the rest of your life will be miserable and unhappy, it’s almost certainly better to not strin…

She had an affair. With one of my closest (then) friends. And I stayed and tried to reconcile for five years (and had a third kid) before I came home from work early one day and caught her with another of my closest (then) friends. I highly recommend that you either work a new schedule out with your employer, or start looking for a new job. If the new job is making less $$$ than the old job, you can petition to have your child support amount adjusted. The fact that you got the new job in order to fulfill the terms of your custody schedule should factor into it. I do highly recommend that you explain the situation to your employer though; there’s a good chance that they will be willing to be more flexible in light of the si…

There are ways to safeguard against the worst ravages of divorce. Most important one is marry someone who is in an equal or superior financial situation to your own. Do not marry someone who makes significantly less money than you do, and for the love of all things good in this world do not marry someone who admits that they eventually want to stop working and be a “homemaker” or “stay-at-home mom.” There are no bigger red flags in the world. Even so, when preparing for marriage, make an ironcla…

Absolutely agreed. That said, I do get this weird sort of “surprised praise” for being a single dad. Like they just can’t quite believe what they are seeing. They thought that men somehow weren’t capable of it. I will say, after four years since separation, it honestly just feels like I cut the dead weight loose. My life is absolutely, without question better with her no longer in it.

I’m certain this happens in some cases, but definitely not all. My ex-wife’s two APs (the second after five years of “reconciliation”) as well as the next guy she got together with after we separated all were close to my age or older, less attractive, and made way less money than I do. The first was a blatant narcissist. The second one had actual brain damage from a TBI that left him in a coma for months (before their affair) and was an alcoholic. The third one was the honest-to-god homeless guy…

A “recently divorced” man (depending on your definition of “recently,” I suppose) is very unlikely to be ready for a new relationship, or to have fully moved on from his marriage yet. I’d say anyone who starts a new relationship within the first year after divorce is making a huge mistake. Probably closer to eighteen months for most people, men or women. Once you end a long-term committed relationship you need to take some time to reconnect with yourself as a single person before you are truly r…

You need to get out and get out now. I don’t know what state you’re in, but there are places where if she can establish you knew about the infidelity and “forgave” her for it, it will no longer be considered by the courts. She can wait a year to get divorced and be right back where you were, with her getting alimony and custody. She is not sorry for what she did, she is just sorry she’s not getting the big payday she’s been counting on.

Give them the option to change clothes and remove nail polish if they want to, but don’t push it. Apart from that, don’t worry about it. Just let her keep building her own gallows, as far as her relationship with the boys goes once they hit their adolescent years.

I had the same thing happen, one of my closest friends, and we had three kids. I stayed and tried to reconcile for 4.5 years before walking in on her with another one of my (then)closest friends. Ideally, the two of you work out the details together - something you can both agree on- and then you hire a mediator to write up the papers. That’s what I did, and it went smoothly. She has to be on board and not want to go for your throat, though.

It’s a hard road for sure, but anyone can turn themselves around, at any point in their lives. And I guarantee that if you do this, and you work hard and achieve mental health, your life will improve dramatically. Your kids will have such a better shot at feeling as safe and loved as possible, and you can become the best version of yourself. It’s rare that people are willing to put in the work, but I’ve seen it happen, and I know what a huge difference it makes.

1: please get the divorce. Be honest with your wife, apologize genuinely, take full responsibility for it (even if you feel she was partly to blame). Take the initiative on getting paperwork drawn up. Be generous in the custody/alimony/whatever. Your marriage is fundamentally unhealthy, and neither of you will be able to grow in healthy ways like this. You owe it to her to let her go, and to give her a solid foundation in which to do this, and you owe it to yourself to work on your own issues. 2…

CPS is worse than useless. Calling them will lead to absolutely nothing but regret. Your lawyer knows what he is talking about. It may seem counter-intuitive and frustrating, but “going easy” for now is almost certainly the best route. Save your tapes and other evidence for the custody battle. Calling CPS will not give you the upper hand. Best case it will change nothing apart from making you look vindictive and less sympathetic. The alternative is worse: they agree something is wrong here, and …

Save. Those. Texts. Knave7575 is correct that things don’t look great right now, but do save any kind of physical evidence of her asking you to watch him, especially stuff like the 3am drop-off or her saying she needs a break. I would simply suggest not looking to date again for a few years. Especially since she cheated and likely abused you in other ways as well, since she has BPD. You’ve got some mental health shit you’re going to need to wade through. Let your lawyer know the situation you are in, and that waiting months to see your kids is not an option for you. He should be able to take care of it in the short term while you wait for the court date. Good instinct, not leaving the house. Keep that up. Good luck with everything.

All of this advice. For now, the main two most important ones are: Get a lawyer, one who works in family law Do. Not. Leave. The. House. No matter what she says, no matter how “reasonable” she’s being. You currently have all the leverage in this relationship. If you leave, you will lose a massive, massive amount of that leverage.

All. Of. This. Furthermore, if she’s been carrying on an emotional affair, this means she is a closet narcissist. Don’t let her get her claws in the kids any more than you can possibly avoid. When you get a lawyer (and yes, you absolutely need a lawyer, if she’s trying to get you to avoid it and do mediation instead it’s because she knows she is more likely to have a significant advantage in that scenario) make sure you specifically get a Family Law lawyer. This is all really excellent advice and encouragement. And if you are someone who didn’t feel like you were full and compete before her… please don’t neglect that therapy, especially before you start your next relationship, because the inverse is also true: if you’re not fulfilled and validated without someone else, you will never be because of someone else, either.

Interesting. The opposite —by far —happened with with. Though it might help that I am naturally very social and outgoing, and my ex was extremely manipulative and controlling and slowly weeded out my entire social circle apart from herself over the course of our relationship.

She wants you to do the “me too” dance. Check out the book “leave a cheater, gain a life” by the ChumpLady. It’s cheap on Amazon, and there’s also an audiobook if you prefer. Long story short, though, your marriage is over. All you will gain by staying longer is more painful mental health issues to have to deal with down the road. Get a family law lawyer to ensure you don’t lose custody of your kid.

NAL, and don’t have an actual answer to your question. But, If she’s done this to a previous ex, it will be far more suspicious-looking to a court when she starts it all up again with you. Highly recommend you find a lawyer, if it’s any possibility at all.

Make sure you listen to your family law lawyer, even when their advice seems difficult or unintuitive. They’ve done this a million times, and they know exactly how to achieve the best possible outcome. If you get full custody, that’s ideal. STBX sounds likea delusional psychopath. Good luck.

Agreed completely. Mediation worked great for me. As long as both parents can be reasonable and not try to weaponize custody against each other, this should be doable, especially since you have no assets together.

If she’s going on rants and already floating the idea, lawyer is definitely the way. If it’s a truly amicable separation, meditation can be better, but those are exceedingly rare.

It’s broken, but trust me that it’s not as broken as it feels right now. Your kids will survive this. Fight for that 50/50. Give them the support and stability they need. They’ll do so much better living in one stable home half the time than they would living in an unstable home for the rest of their lives. You have great family times ahead of you still. It won’t be the same family it once was, but in many ways it will be better.
/r/Divorce_Men20/07/22 06:49 AM
2

Go for week on/week off, get a place in the same school district as your STBX. Fight like hell for 50/50, because once she has more, there’s a chance she’ll never budge again just to spite you. Might be worth agreeing to forgo CS from her if she’s willing to go 50/50 and you can afford it at all.

Honestly I’m of the opinion that nobody who wouldn’t be ok being single forever is actually completely ready for a healthy relationship.
