I have a bronze medal from a team tournament on my wall (I do a sport that's both team and individual). I have a bunch of medals (plenty of those are gold as well) somewhere in a drawer. Good post! I have something to add: I've noticed that your 'alpha-ness' not only depends on your looks or your attitude, but also on how good you are at the thing your environment is based on. For instance, I am in fairly good physical shape, but by no means very ripped. I am however very good at the sport I do. Don't forget Hanlon's razor here: never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity. There are a myriad of reasons why birth control can fail. While I agree with your statement of 'you should live to fight another die' as opposed to 'finish or die trying', and while I agree that there could be medical risks involved, I don't think that is the case here. He was probably in a room reserved for patients recovering from scheduled surgeries (or however you want to call it, the hospitals affiliated with my med school have similar rooms). While the ER probably sees a good bit of traffic on new years, I would wager that there aren't many surgeries performed.

This is completely true, but I would like to add something that I have come to realize over the past couple of months of pushing myself to be better: working for it is essential for more reason than one. I just want to say that I completely agree with OP. I spent a year in an all-boys boarding school in high school and it has changed me for the better in ways I cannot even begin to describe.
