At the end of the day, I'm 43 and have a "count" of precisely zero, so I'm in no position to judge anybody. I've been reading about people's attitudes about things like this since the days long before Reddit when it was forums etc. At this point, it's a fair bet that any partner I might have has had more experience than me. It's just what it is. The fact that my same-age peers are picking out colleges with their children adds another layer of strangeness to life. But there isn't much I can actio…

I’m the male version of that. I get along perfectly fine at work. I get along with my family when I see them. But when it comes to intimacy? I’m in my 40s and have the exact same level of terror as I did when I was 14 and my classmate dared me to ask a girl to dance. Literally anything is more appealing than flirting with the potential of rejection. I’d rather get punched.

When I first saw what that guy looks like, I realized I didn’t have to read any of his books to understand what his attitude is and why he has it.

It’s kind of amazing to me every time I hear the sexually unsuccessful try to rant at the successful about the real “truth.” Or call them hypocrites. Or act indignant that the successful don’t see the “folly of their ways”. It’s like bro, are you in high school? The people you’re ranting about/to are too busy having sex and relationships to care what you have to say. Well, this is Reddit so maybe they are in high school, actually. I’m not successful either, but this activity is a fool’s errand. …

I'll be 43 in a few weeks. You tell me.

Would you rather be a warrior in a garden, or a gardener in a war? I mean, just tell women you're not the stereotype and that's that, pass the ball back. If they fade, it wasn't you, right? Just be positive. You know yourself you're not intending to put people off. You're just you. Do people that the world sees as "customer service nice" have the same desires as everyone else? Sure. Is it enraging sometimes to not have anywhere to put that energy that makes us human? Absolutely. But that's a dif…

42-year-old virgin here. I don't believe there is anything outrageously wrong with me, but as pointed out elsewhere in the thread, human beings are very adaptable to situations, and routines can keep you boring and safe, if not really experiencing much of what life has to offer.

Bro, I'm a 42-year-old virgin. Even if you don't think 22 is young in this scheme of things, you still have a lot of time.

When I heard about this "trend," my first thought was... well, it's already been 18 years and I still function as a person just fine, what's another 18?

I have no problem with it. But I have no luck. I'm almost two decades into a dry spell.

My dad was at Woodstock. He also served in Vietnam. He'll be the first to tell you, the Sexual Revolution didn't impact or benefit everyone. My whole adult life I've been walking around going, man where's that revolution there was supposed to be. Liberation freed women but it didn't free us. Maybe that wasn't the point and it wasn't supposed to.

Being a single man or woman in your middle-age can lead to absolutely crushing loneliness, because there's just nobody else yup

Us slightly older guys aren't doing well neither. Last time I got laid most of you posters were in elementary school.

blatant hypocrisy One thing to let go of (that you eventually do by the time you hit my age) when trying to mate, is the idea of anyone's hypocrisy being brought to justice. "But but but.... don't any of you SEEEEE!?!? They sayyy one thing but then dooo another!!!" Uh, yeah, we see, and there's nothing you can do about it. All is fair in love and war. None of this shit makes sense. Personally I decided to just bury myself in work and creature comforts to forget how much of a PITA it all is.

I would feel uncomfortable personally dating someone whose experiences have been so very different from mine. I feel the same from my point of view (41, no experience). If a woman around my age has kids in middle or even high school, and her kids have probably had more experiences than me, I can't imagine there would be much to talk about. It would be extremely awkward. I have this feeling around coworkers my age who talk about taking their families on vacation and I'm like yeah, I'm going to mi…

I remember an article posted elsewhere that caused quite a stir, I remember it too. "I was a middle aged virgin" from salon dot com maybe a decade ago, or more. I recognize that man's daily routine in my own. I'm still working on avoiding that fate.

I don’t think it’s bad. But my ego winces. Because I never got to do that. (I’m 40. Had one at 19, one at 23). So I don’t know what I don’t know.

I’m 40 and not interested in another man’s kids. Ive never had anything against having my own kids, but I made poor decisions in youth and waited too long, so being stepdad is what I expect to end up doing if I ever plan to date and have sex again.

Can confirm at 40. Many of us don’t know the reason, but surmise that there is one, and that carries a lot of unhappiness with it.

I feel like, at 40, I’m probably older than most people in this sub. But I bet ten dollars I have way less experience than almost any of you. So I hang around. I’m not impressionable like I was as a young person. But I do like to read what people are thinking.

This is why I love being a musician. Music is the universal language and it bridges age gaps between players. I enjoy both analog and digital sounds, so we can meet at our own level.

That's the stage of life where I am now. But I didn't have success in my teens, 20s or 30s. I don't see anything changing. What do you attribute the change to?

Also if you don’t put in the work, your metabolism breaks down. After I was 25, I went from 198 up to 265. My weight has stalled between 255-258 for the past decade, no matter how little or much I eat.

Most of us are completely inexperienced in life and mediocre post-college. If I’m underemployed in a customer service job with some communications degree and I don’t want to date the part time bartender/part time CNA, we’ll who the hell am I?

I'm 16 years into a 'dry spell'. I would still rather be intimate with a woman who actually desires me.

I never had a conversation with my parents about girls or dating. Mostly because in my childhood it was rare to have my parents in the same room. My mom is no longer with us, and as an adult I think my dad and I have talked about my dating life maybe... three times? And only very briefly. The lasting consequence of their hands off approach was my complete lack of social integration as a kid, which follows me to this day. I'm 39 and the last time I was with someone, I was around your age OP. Alth…

We didn't wait that much to be with older women. We missed the young ones when we are young and now have to settle for older women or women that look older than us? This is the crux of it for me. I'm 39 and most of the attention I get is from women in their 50s. I missed out on the beauty of youth. But I still get to do taxes and get dragged to consignment shops with someone who is older than my mom was when she died? I'd rather just be an ugly dude who plays music, writes and learns to surf.

I would say that if I did anything wrong overall, I never took responsibility (at a certain point) for my dysfunctional relationship with rejection and failure, and my learned helplessness. If I could go back, and talk to my young self, there is a lot I would say: "don't be so shy and anxious and bashful. Don't spend your teenage years in your room. Your parents aren't happy but it isn't your fault. Your dad doesn't mean to talk about Vietnam all the time. He has PTSD and is hurting. There IS ro…

The vast majority of this sub is a product of their fathers neglect and/or demented obsession with income maxxing, When I was growing up, any man to man communication I tried to have with my dad would get drowned out in his PTSD from serving in Vietnam. He hand waved away all my issues as basically irrelevant compared to trying not to die in a jungle. So I learned that expressing how I felt about anything was unimportant.

There is something to this, for sure. I played Little League but was never a good team player. Introverted, quirky, low frustration tolerance, sore loser, quit if things weren't perfect. To this day (40) I'm never quite comfortable with the easy camaraderie, jokes, ball-busting, silliness, of guys at work. As you can imagine, I can't flirt naturally neither. I'm quiet, stoic, moody, internal, not open, and yes cold. And I feel awful about all of the above. But it seems to just be the way I am.

I'd think my little brother learned from my mistakes, rather than my guidance. What he witnessed: I spent my teen years playing video games and listening to music in my bedroom. In high school I never want to parties, never went to dances, never hung out with friends, barely HAD friends, didn't go to prom, didn't go to grad nite, never went on dates. In college I commuted, unable to make friends, got laid twice (early 20s). The friends I had in my 20s were degenerate, unemployed misfits. He watc…

I never disliked the idea of being a husband and father. I don't mind kids at all. The problem is, I never tried. Never put any work in to trying attract partners. I have been on two dates. One when I was 19, the other when I was 23. Now I'm 38. Women my age have teenage children. They have 20+ years of dating and relationship experience that I simply missed, no matter how much self-reflection and introspection I engaged in during my isolation. And that it has been isolation. I don't have close …

I'm 38 and I can't go back. I have 2 choices: accept an isolated middle and old age (if I don't take myself out before the nursing home does). Or maintain the option, at least in my heart, that a family is on the table, and keep myself healthy just in case.
