Unless the accused disappears and can't be tracked down by the police, then maybe the public could help track down the suspect. This way if they are found innocent the identity is never revealed and no life is ruined. Also punish the accuser for identifying the accused before trial unless necessary. Like maybe a baseline of ~10 hours community service, nothing too bad, and the longer they hold the lie they could face paying the defendants court fees or even jail if the trial actually happens and they are found to have lied.
