Neither of them 'have to be'. This guy is telling it like it is for him.

I remember a conversation I had a few years ago with a female friend who was complaining about how much she 'needed' to spend on makeup and perfume. I pointed out that she didn't really 'need' to, and she said that it was a need and that I wouldn't understand because I'm a man. I think this is a pretty good analogy to men being more open with their emotions. In both cases, society is placing a gendered expectation on us to behave in a certain way, and if we fail to act in accordance with those e…

I've been in a similar situation, and I can say without a doubt that you can do better. I was dating a feminist for over a year once. At that time I considered myself a feminist too, but whenever we discussed gender issues we would end up arguing. I would listen to her views and then ask questions to try to understand them better, because honestly they didn't make much sense. She said that I would get it if I was a woman, and if I kept questioning her she would get angry and accuse me of intenti…

Didn't happen to me, but a friend of mine was raped. He posted about it on Facebook when the metoo hashtag first started trending. He was told that, as a man, he should be listening, not talking.

I'm always amazed when i hear people discussing roleplaying. It sounds so intricate and enveloping, like you really are living another life. Someday i'll try it out for myself, once i have my regular life under control.. I think i have experienced a lot of what you mentioned. Up until my mid 20s, I didn't realise misandry was a thing. I knew there were aspects of society that negatively affected men, but i assumed that this was nowhere near as bad as what women dealt with, because that's the mes…

Here is a video of an Australian comedian explaining why he's boycotting Gillette for reasons other than that ad. It's worth a watch for anyone who cares about ethical consumerism (which is probably most of us on this post, since we're talking boycotts already). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBIqb6KKmEg&t=466

Mostly Harmless was (and I think still is) a John Doe. There's probably a family and community missing him somewhere.

The Partner Abuse journal's state-of-knowledge project goes into this a little. None of the differences are huge, but they note that self-defense is not a huge motivator for women or men, and that women are slightly more likely to be motivated by anger/retaliation.

As a man with terrible mental health, I for one would be very interested to hear what you have to say on the topic.

You're probably right. The first MRA I ever met IRL was also a feminist. He said it was because he recognized both genders suffered under the status quo and he believed in improving things for everyone. I'd call his type an egalitarian, but he identified as MRA+feminist, so I guess it's down to what you want to call yourself. The baseline for entry is just knowing their historical lack of rights and believing they continue to have issues today. I think the historical situation was similar to t…

I think they ARE real feminists, and here's why: What makes anybody a feminist? To qualify, I'd say you need to believe the following three things: That men and women are equal and should be treated as such. That society treats women worse than men overall. That you are a feminist. If you only believe the first, then you're more likely to call yourself an egalitarian. If you only believe the first two, then you *could be* considered a feminist, but if you yourself don't think you are one, then y…

The reason I think it's more common to assume women do is because of power dynamics, which is based in the philosophy and evidence that whoever controls resources (money) and policy (political representation) is able to enact their will or call the shots more readily than people who don't. So since men controlled the money and political/decision-making power for most of history, there is a fair argument that they've had a disproportionate amount of power. I think this is less a fair argument and…

A lot of people have already made a lot of good points, but since you seem to be reading and responding to everybody (heartfelt thanks for that, btw) I thought I'd throw in my two cents too. I think the reason male issues get so little attention is that people don't care as much about men, and (at least part of) the reason for that is the false narrative that men have more privilege in society than women do. Men have it easy, people think, so why should we waste our efforts making their lives ea…

I won't say that all or even most feminists are misandrists, but at the same time, saying that the misandrists aren't real feminists is just a 'no true Scotsman' excuse. And besides, if they say they're feminists then who am I to tell them otherwise?

That women can be and often are just as violent as men. I referenced the journal Domestic Abuse's state-of-knowledge project, which amongst other things says that in most violent relationships both partners are violent, and in relationships with only one violent partner, it's twice as likely to be the woman. I sent this to her in a private message after she shared a post saying that most domestic violence is husbands beating their wives. She didn't disagree about any specific fact, she just told…

Have you heard of the BIGI (Basic Indicator of Gender Inequality)? It's a relatively new way of measuring gender equality across countries. The more popular metrics start with the assumption that women are disadvantaged and try to quantify the disadvantage, and as such a lot of mens' issues get left out or minimized. The BIGI aims to be an unbiased metric for gender equality, and the results generally show that men and women both face a lot of gender-based disadvantages in different areas of lif…

Thanks. I really appreciate that. A few days ago a friend of mine ended our friendship because I disagreed with her over male victims of domestic abuse, so your praise is honestly very validating.

I like this sub because I agree with almost everything the average lefty believes in, except feminism. I'm not anti-feminist, but as many people have already pointed out, the 'male oppressor/female victim' dynamic is not a helpful or accurate way to look at things. The world is an unfair place and as a liberal I see it as the goal of an advancing civilisation to try to make it more fair, but the feminist viewpoint seems to encourage looking at all gender problems, even all social problems if you…

I don't think she means "there are no female serial killers". I think she means "there are no women who, through their crimes, have become household names". Just like there ARE female composers, but none as famous as Mozart. Edit: typo

I like this idea. I love Gab, but at the moment I don't use it much because it just seems to be full of right-wing conspiracy theorists. I'd love it if some of the more controversial subs would move to there, preferably before getting banned from here for not catering to the left-wing conspiracy theorists.

I'm from Australia but I have lived in the US before, and I'd say the situation here is similar with one exception: circumcision. Non-medical, non-religious circumcision just doesn't happen here, or anywhere else in the world as far as I know.

Men are far more likely to die on the job, so I think that that should be included too. However, I agree with the other commenters who have said that the empathy gap is the biggest issue facing men today.

If it makes anybody feel any better, Urban Dictionary's definitions of feminism are worse (except for the top one, which is surprisingly fair)

I don't think this would help. In Australia any contract is void if you were drunk when you signed it, and I imagine it would be similar in Georgia (country or state). Anyone already crazy enough that they would make a false accusation of rape could still do so, either by 1) claiming they were intoxicated. Even if they were totally sober, they could just lie and say they were drunk. As long as they wait a few days after signing, there is no way for you to prove that they were not drunk. 2) claim…

Here is a good way to argue the point with your girlfriend on etymological grounds. 'Feminism' doesn't really have a single, universal definition. We are all familiar with the feminist movement, but even hardcore feminists often disagree on exactly what feminism means, other than that it aims to address issues in society that disadvantage women (see TERFs and SWERFs, for example). Because 'feminism' doesn't have a single clear definition, you and your girlfriend might be talking about completely…

I'm tempted to go check this out, but given Melbourne's political climate, I'm worried the organisers will be equating 'positive masculinity' with being blue-pilled.

I don't have any advice, but I want to offer my support. I was in an emotionally abusive, gas-lighting relationship for a little over a year, and I know it can be hard as hell. Hard to stay, and hard to leave. Five years later and I'm still feeling the effects on a daily basis. Be strong, and take care of yourself. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
