It is not an uncommon practice at all. You think of it in terms of glory of honor, but they treat it as regular practice. Competing against someone of equal or a bit higher level than you is very effective practice, and it just so happens that there are a lot more male youth teams than high-end female teams. In short they do it for practice and scrimming not for beating a bunch of middle/high schoolers.
