I can't remember the source for this one, but a good way to break the ice (although isn't as direct) is to go up to them with a small bag with keys or whatever and approach a group (3 or so girls works good) and ask if you can just leave your bag their while you go for a swim/surf, saying you don't want to leave it out in the wide open.
