79k before taxes After maxing out 401k and HSA and paying taxes/insurance premiums, take home pay is about 41k. No donations from parents. I live on about 15k a year. Cheap apartment, no car payment (paid in cash 6 years ago), no student loans (paid off 5 years ago). Whatever I don't spend, I stockpile in my investment accounts.

Started out at 63k out of college in 2014. Stayed around there for a few years. Jumped to 77k last year, and got a small raise to 79k this year. Yes, working as an engineer.

Other than the stuff in the title: Staying single Not having kids Holding down a decent job Doesn't really feel like success yet tbh. 250k at 28 is a nice start but I still have a long way to go.

I understand your point of view. I felt the same way when I was just starting out in my career. At some point, you have to accept that whether you like it or not, money rules the world. It's just the world we live in. I live a minimalist lifestyle too. I was not born into wealth. I started out with a net worth of $0. Of course I don't enjoy waking up and working in a corporate environment every day. I don't work so I can buy stuff, or start a family, or buy a house or a fancy car. I don't care a…

I've lost my job before, and it took me 6 months to land a comparable one. Having 30k in savings helped me ride out that period without having to sell my investments. Basically it helps me sleep better at night.

Find a way to get into a decent paying career. Once you have one, live beneath your means. Consistently save and invest a large percentage of your earnings into index funds over a long period of time. It takes years to build wealth.

I have most of my cash in a high yield savings account (currently at 2.1% interest). I like to keep 1-2 years of expenses in cash so I don't have to burn through my investments if I lose my job.

Congrats. I started out about $18k in the hole after college, but I paid off those loans about a year after graduation. My investments are mostly in low cost Vanguard index funds. I don't own any real estate or trade individual stocks.

The only people who know about my wealth are random internet strangers. I live modestly (drive a beater, live in a small apartment), keep a low profile, and don't reveal any specific numbers to family/friends.

Over the last 4 years: My own contributions (401k/IRA/brokerage): $97k Investment returns: $18k Markets are currently at all time highs right now so my investments have been doing well. It's one of my personal goals too. Just like Robert DeNiro said in Heat, "don't let yourself get attached to anything you're not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner."

I have my own apartment. It's a small one bedroom unit - basically just a few rooms in a house. I have a small living room, small kitchen, and small bathroom. There are 5 other similar units in the house. The other tenants are all pretty much quiet guys who keep to themselves. I live in a very quiet area. It's not the nicest place, but it's comfortable and I like it here. I've been living here for a little over a year so far.

I use Mint and Personal Capital to track my net worth. This screenshot is from a weekly email I get from Mint. Investments are mostly in boring Vanguard index funds, stuff like VFIAX and VTSAX. My portfolio allocation is around 90% stocks and 10% bonds.

It really is that simple. Living modestly is the key to building wealth. I am 26 and recently crossed $150k net worth. I only earn about $65k a year.

I'm a modest earner, but a good saver. Always lived by the phrase, "it's not how much you make, it's how much you keep." Minimizing expenses and saving/investing consistently is the key to building wealth over time.

I'm 26 right now and I think I'm doing the right thing. Working, building wealth, and living a modest life with minimal expenses. Right now I have a $147k net worth. No plans to marry or have kids.

Nah, I'm not great or looking for validation. I'm a working class slave with an unfulfilling corporate job. Just doing what I can to set myself up for a better future. Times might not be like this forever, and since I have no one to count on but myself, it is wise to set aside money while I still can.
/r/MGTOW01/08/18 06:42 PM

True, but I don't think people are going to stop fucking and breeding anytime soon. All they are doing is creating new generations of slaves, who will have to fight over dwindling resources in an increasingly competitive society with an uncertain future. I don't think the world is headed in a good direction, and I have a bleak outlook towards my generation's future prospects. It's a horrible idea to have a child in this day and age, but people are far too short-sighted and narcissistic to realiz…

This is why I question married couples aiming for FI. Are you truly financially "independent" if you have a spouse? I think the ultimate freedom in life would be to achieve financial independence as a single person.

I think the world already has too many people in it who are suffering, and creating more people is only going to make our existing problems much worse.

I try to keep a low profile. Most people would probably think I'm not that well off if they saw me on the street. I look like a typical broke young adult/college student.

Most of my net worth is in retirement too. I don't have any real estate right now, currently renting a small apartment in a low cost area and driving a paid off beater. I think about $90k of my investments are in retirement accounts (401k's and IRA's). I have another $20k in a taxable account, and I have about $32k in cash in a high yield savings acct. Then another $2k or so in checking to cover bills, rent, etc. I could probably throw more cash into my investments, but as a contractor, it helps…

My 20s have been garbage. I'm 26 now. Just trying to keep my head down, live a modest life, go to work, and save/invest my income (I work as an engineer). It's the best option I have. I have money (over $100k in investments and over $30k in savings), but I can't really touch any of it before retirement. I have no debt. I live alone in a small apartment and drive a beat up car. This is all by choice. Very repetitive and shitty, but I'm trying to set myself up for a better future.

40 hour work weeks, even for 50 years, isn't a lot. That's 104,000 hours (assuming 52 weeks per year), or 4,333 days, or 619 weeks, or 11.9 years. Of nothing but work. That's a fuckton.
/r/MGTOW11/05/18 05:33 PM

As an engineer who works 40 hours a week, it sucks. I'm 26 and have been working for 4 years. I get through it by trying to save up as much money as possible. I want to buy back my freedom.

Too risky for me. I'm taking the boring Vanguard index funds route. If I had crypto I'd probably end up losing everything.

Good luck. It'll take me around 700 years at my current pay rate to make $45-$50 million in gross earnings. Maybe I'll get one in another lifetime.

Single, 26, no kids, low cost of living area here. My gross annual pay is only in the mid-60s, but my net worth is $130k. If I made $150k a year, I'd be retired within the next five years.

Check out r/financialindependence and r/leanfire. I'm 26 now, single, no kids, with a net worth of about $130k. My expenses are super low (15k a year) and I live alone in a LCOL (low cost of living) area. My leanFIRE number is around $500k in investments, which is probably attainable in my 30s. But for a more comfortable life, I will probably aim higher, maybe a $1M portfolio so I can live off $30k-$40k a year indefinitely (not hard for a single guy with low expenses).
/r/MGTOW12/04/18 01:00 PM

Nice job. I hit $100k back in September 2017. Keep it up.

Mostly low expense ratio Vanguard index funds. For example my 401k at my current job is 90% VFIAX and my IRA's are in VFIFX. I also have a 401k from a previous employer and a brokerage account. Total portfolio value is currently right under $92k. I've been working and investing since 22, so it's been 3-4 years so far.

I'm lucky I live and work in a low cost of living area. My rent and utilities for a 1 bedroom apartment is under $500 a month.

I'm always worried that it's about to crash. Right now I have more than $90k in investments and it just went up by another $900 last night. When the crash happens, I'm just hoping to ride it out. I'm in it for the long term. I have a decent amount in savings (~$30k) to get me through if times get tough.

Can completely understand if for example it's something you're not interested in / don't understand (most don't anyways....) and that's why you don't want to touch it. That's pretty much it. I've thought about putting some money into crypto, but no more than I could afford to lose. Maybe $5k or $6k. Haven't pulled the trigger yet though.

I take home less than half of $6k a month, and I make nowhere near $90k a year. A good portion of that $1600 week to week increase was because of investment gains. Also, more than 25% of my pay goes into my 401k.
