I suspect it's just a product of our evolution. Woman evolved to need a strong mate, who could protect her when she was pregnant and nursing and who could also protect vulnerable children. It makes sense, then, that women would find strength and dominance — to a certain extent — attractive. In the same way, men find young and fertile women more attractive. Yeah, that's pretty silly. Firstly, something can be your favorite book or movie without that implying an endorsement of the main character's actions and opinions. Secondly, this smooths over an awful lot of complexity in and differences between the characters in those works of fiction.
