Not the case in the US (where Judge Judy was practicing). He would be ordered to pay child support, but not alimony.

The description of that thread indicates that the poster thought the man got what he deserved; the issue was that the woman was treated with significantly more leniency. Your attempt to make it about 'defending' the man shows poor reading comprehension at best. The only way they that might be a possible interpretation is in the context of defending his right to equal justice.

No, the point is that rappers can be dickheads all they want, as long as listening to their music is voluntary. This is different from a man facing legal prejudice with his biological offspring, both in magnitude and in kind (also, do not forget that the club is a private space, no one is playing Biggie over the DMV loudspeakers). Again, I am all for combating sexism, as long as it is a cultural movement and not legislated. It would great if we all burst out in spontaneous hugs, but if the cost …

You are making a comparison between a women who makes a choice to enter a certain area to engage in a particular activity and a woman whose choices are constrained against her will. These are not equivalent. Yes, the rap artist has the right to make whatever music he wants, and the club owner can play whatever he wants, this is not oppression, this is freedom. I don't think most people who post on this thread would deny that there are such things as "women's issues" but they do think that the mo…

Yes, because having to deal with other people's freedom of expression is the same as having your own denied.

Yup, might makes right; don't ever forget that the best way to resolve disputes is through violence and intimidation. Never, and I mean never, admit to having been a victim, that would make you soft.

Perhaps I/we are being too sensitive regarding this particular advertisement, but it struck a nerve. And, you're right - more men than women are educated in the third world; but that number is still pathetically small. There are so few people receiving a decent education in south east asia that to create an entire organization to benefit only girls, using such bombastic language seems overly divisive. I shouldn't shoot the messenger, but the emphasis on the plight of women in these countries as …

Source? Religious education does not count as education. Having been to the third world recently (Indonesia) I can tell you that outside of the cities, it isn't just women who are denied a chance at schooling.

You haven't answered why we should only focus on women in 3rd world countries, and seem to operate under the (false) assumption that (all? most?) of the men in these countries are receiving an education. If both sexes are better educated, these beneficial effects would happen faster, due to the reduced pushback from ignorant, traditionalist men, no? Also, the conspicuous absence of men/boys/neutrality in the ad seems evidence of a preferred gender; unless you think the same ad promoting educatio…

Who is reinforcing societal norms? All that we ask is that women recognize gender/sex roles and work against them. Much of the latter half of the 20th century was spent teaching men to recognize their assumptions in relationships so that they could approach women as equal partners; those that have taken this to heart are met with a double expectation: they must fulfill all the traditional male responsibilities, AND treat their woman as an empowered individual that doesn't have any responsibiliti…

Are they really socially inept, or inept because they feel pressured to be someone they are not in order to have the things that society tells them are valuable (love, security, acceptance)? This may come as a surprise, but not everyone is a charming extrovert, nor is there anything wrong with those that aren't. Perhaps there is too much of a pity party vibe here at times, but you seem very hostile to the people suffering from the trends that you decry. If you have respect for GRW, how can you t…

If you wish to continue to use the 'feminist' label out of a sense of pride at the past accomplishments of the movement, feel free to do so; but as it has been pointed out many times in this thread, you will continue to receive predictable reactions and it will be that much harder for your (reasonable) arguments to be accepted. I mind myself agreeing with much of your stated ideology, and I admire you for starting the discussion, however, there appears to be an insufferable condescension on disp…
