The 4% discrepancy between CDC's assertions ("over half of women... in their lifetime") and the NISVS survey (47.3% women experience aggregate violence) is **because the survey only accounts for adults 18+.** The statistic of 50%+ incorporates data on youth (e.g., 2017 data from the national Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that 15.2% of female and 4.3% of male high school students reported forced sexual activity the year before the survey) which is also listed under the references. Since you se…

Calling the CDC fake news and calculated misinformation (technically that’s disinformation) means there is no meaningful conversation to be had here. For anyone else who may come across this moronic comment, know that the survey cited is from an academic extension of the US federal health agency (i.e., CDC) that oversees national statistics on the issue. Source: The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey: 2016/2017 Report on Sexual Violence. Atlanta, GA: National Center for Injury …

While I agree there are disparities in other aspects, all of this is within a patriarchal system. Higher education used to exclude women, women couldn’t open a bank account without a husband until the 1970s, and marital rape was only recognized as a crime in the 1990s. Not to mention the persistent gender pay gap for women of the same qualifications. I’m on a Harvard study looking at workplace issues which don’t fixate on gender differences, but women are more likely to work precarious jobs with…

Me continuing to engage is akin to inviting a climate scientist and climate denialist to share a stage for a 50/50 debate. The actual research suggests 99% of climate scientists agree the change is real and human caused though. Australia is currently protesting violence against women which they say is a national emergency with a woman dying every four days. This is obviously broader than dating violence but the gendered dynamics don’t exist in a vacuum. Try organizing a similar movement around s…

I appreciate your openness and also enjoy having my beliefs challenged (it’s quite literally what I study). It’s the debating semantics and defending defending the CDC as a “reliable source” that leaves me with nothing meaningful to contribute to this thread anymore. My only point was the sheer prevalence of slander in these groups is no where close to the potential risks women face in dating which is the purpose of such groups. I don’t find that to be a radical statement nor subjective interpre…

You’re the one who said “lesser” SV could be on par with slander so no, I’m not contradicting myself. Instead I’m agreeing that can be true — yet that’s only “lesser” offenses as the scope of SV extends to the most physically invasive and traumatic offense of rape. Secondly, I gave examples in a fresh comment of the responses I saw just yesterday on the fb group. Cases of slander would be a very small minority given the lack of comments indicating red flags at all. Considering that I can see the…

You phrase this like an either/or — sounds like men would benefit as well if they had a group to hear of potentially abusive romantic partners. This isn’t a zero sum game. As for slander vs SV, the scope is not remotely similar. Sure, slander is perhaps more harmful socially than unsolicited dick pics, but why are we even comparing two unacceptable behaviors at all? Much less dismissing how serious SV can be in so many other circumstances? MeToo was an international movement for a reason and ste…

Let me give you all a snapshot of what is shared and discussed in these groups: Generally comments are a mix of: - “He says he’s looking for long-term but ghosts when he doesn’t get sex; kept asking for nudes; was quick to send 🍆📷” - “🚩DM for info” - “Went on a date with him last year, was a really nice guy just not for me. Go for it!” - “I know him from high school, haven’t talked in a few years but he was always nice and comes from a good family!” - “I’m talking to him right now, we have a dat…

The lower condom use among women is interesting — although the measure didn’t tease out committed partners vs more casual encounters. I’d speculate that fewer women are having casual sex than men so protection against STDs isn’t as necessary.

Here’s a scoping review on SA and dating apps for you 🤡 It’s not my study, but I am a published academic that uses statistics. Just remember it’s never too late to change.

The CDC is the source — it’s literally the federal agency any other source would be citing so the data is valid. If anything it’s an under-reported number due to stigma. I’m a PhD in the social sciences who would love to see your more “reliable sources.” While I take slander seriously, it does not cause the same degree of harm as rape. The number of slander victims in these closed online communities is also notably smaller than women at risk for SA. As for this group, the recent body count posts…

Over 50% of women experiencing sexual violence in their lifetime is a small number? I don’t even know what to say to this level of ignorance and lack of empathy. ETA: in my case, the guy was president of the Republican club at my private college..

And if/when you get posted — being the ONS that cared about your partner’s pleasure, was a gentleman throughout your time together, and upfront about wanting a casual connection — you’ll have nothing to worry about. Don’t be a shitty human and people won’t say shitty things. Easy enough. Calling these women sluts and liars isn’t a great start though.

For sure, and 9/10 men [in my experience] push for no condom from the start then grumble every time thereafter. Like “huh, wonder why?”

Not like women get drugged while on dates in public places or accosted only after they go behind closed doors 🙄 Clearly the minimal reach of occasional slander (which I haven’t seen in the Boston group personally) is a much greater threat to the social fabric of society👌 Also reducing female posters to women who can’t keep their legs closed makes it clear your mind is made up. And all of this within the double standard of a sub where y’all [would be thrilled] to get laid the same night you meet …

Lady here 👋 The benefits of reducing harm for others far outweigh the costs stemming from a few select posters abusing the platform for slander. If you think about dating historically, we used to meet potential partners through our organizations or existing network which was a form of vetting. Dating apps are now closer to anonymous where someone could use fake photos/info with minimal traceability to those with bad intentions. Complain all you want, but some of us do find value in crowdsourcing…

💯 Also showing desire can make her want to stay desirable, too. If she enjoys feeling sexy with you then she’ll see value in the effort it takes to keep looking good.

I agree with fitness classes, bouldering, rec leagues. I’ve never met a man who didn’t want an active, fit partner. Plus people often attend classes alone (lots of cute guys in my hot yoga class). Try out class pass. I’ve been approached by men in practically every circumstance: grocery shopping, walking my dog, reading at the park, on the subway.. you need to ensure you look approachable with open body language, slight smile, not in a rush. Single and interested men would be thrilled if you sta…

Woman here (34F) - I try to plan dates with friendly competition, ideally something you can hold your own in. I’m a solid pool player so going to a billiards lounge gives me a chance to build tension as a worthy adversary with cheeky glances and light teasing (“Don’t miss” ;)). Being an active date also means my body moves in ways that sitting at a bar just doesn’t allow (e.g. bending over to make a shot especially in a tight fitting outfit). Last time I went out we ended up playing as a team in…

It’s not that people give up on themselves in their 30s, rather the difference in lifestyle begins to show the stark disparity. You can’t drink every weekend, live on takeout, and not regularly exercise while staying generally fit after 20s. As a woman in my early 30s, I’m putting in more work now than before to stay attractive. As for age disparities, I’m getting cold approached by men in their mid 20s more than 30s when I go out. I know it’s different gender dynamics, but maybe don’t go for mo…

Lady here - this is an accurate take with a few caveats. The photos have to be good, every single one. No car selfies, not your bathroom or bed or couch as a background, and keep your shirt on. Preferably 1-2 group photos with friends. Gym pic is fine. You should still cover a few basics to ward off concerns. That includes height, education (just the level), and that you’re physically active. I do exactly what OP describes with looking for reasons to swipe left. Currently just chose this exact p…

Lady here - I wouldn’t say the title of fuckboy is always a positive. I use the term to describe someone who is exceptionally attractive, likely knows it, and might be an asshole because of it. If the conversation is smooth and somewhat evasive then even more likely I wouldn’t trust them. But I’m also not interested in riding the town bicycle. Or more aptly I’d rather be the player than get played, I guess.

I agree with museums, gallery openings, art classes like pottery (likely better for those after uni). I myself frequent a low key jazz club or, when the weather is nice, bring a book to the park. I’m in a very academic city which makes this easier though.

Woman to woman is hard to gauge if they don’t present as queer so for that I recommend apps. You could go the unicorn route and find a hetero couple (more like they’ll find you). Check out FetLife, too. I realize that’s not cold approach, but you can practice flirting when you meet up with people who you know are interested.

Instead of chasing the hot girls, look for quality in the average woman. Tans fade, nails chip, and one sided convos only last so long. Look for someone who prioritizes fitness but maybe not makeup. A pretty smile with a little mischief behind it. That is a woman that will win the long game of hotness. And if you give genuine compliments when she dresses more sexy / puts effort in then you might inspire her to explore her feminine side even more.
