Eh. This fairly famous TV presenter in my country was driving drunk and hit a pedestrian, killing him. He fully accepted all charges, admitted his guilt, paid for the burial of the killed guy, apologised a lot and agreed to pay a big pile of money to the dead guy's family. It's a good idea to have a dash cam. They use power from the car battery (no need to mess with changing AA batteries or recharging them) and the old video footage is erased when it runs out of space. The original idea behind alimony and child support kind of makes sense. However, I think it would be a lot more reasonable if whoever is paying them would have to pay after the products and services were received. Trust me, you would not like to work outside during an English winter. On the other hand, it's a bit scary that some woman with a bit of trickery can force you to flee the country and live off the grid for the next 20+ years, until she forgets you. Hah :) I swear, I just randomly picked one model from US market. I'm in UK now and all new models have different engines, I checked BMW, Nissan, Mercedes and VW. Either different fuel or different engine size. As for 5th Gear, DSG was 0.4s faster. That's one bad-timed blink and it would be slower. Also, I wouldn't trust that girl when it comes to accurate statistics, 5th Gear is not popular in UK for a reason.

They aren't faster, exact same engine with manual transmission will not have this aforementioned disadvantage. As for mpg, VW website only showed 1mpg better fuel consumption in VW CC 2011 edition. Going against the wind on a highway will make bigger difference...

I will drive manuals all the way until electric cars will become popular. Because you know, electric cars don't need gearboxes, motors can spin as fast as 120,000 rpm. The faster they spin - the higher is efficiency. At full speed it can reach 95%+, compared to 30% or so of internal combustion engines.

Sorry, I meant push-start. As in pushing the car and then releasing the clutch, so wheels turn the engine and it starts. As for speed of changing gears, this is not relevant. Take any car (and I mean it, any car) with identical parameters, the only difference is the gearbox. Manual one will accelerate faster than automatic. Time of changing the gear is not what matters here, it's all about gear ratios. Also, manuals are much more fun to drive, when driving for fun.

That's not her fault, not many people in US know how to drive with manual gearbox. In Europe (as far as I've seen, well at least in Northern parts) almost all cars are manual because they go faster and use less fuel than automatic ones. Oh, and you can't jump-start an automatic. That is important because car batteries tend to die when it's -20C outside.

Well, in my country young people are charged almost 10 times as much as old. However, that only lasts for few years, then some statistics are gathered about how you drive and from then your insurance rates depend on how you drive, regardless of your age or sex. For those first few years young people (me included) just get "Family" pack on their parent's name, it covers everyone who drives that car and it's cheap.
