I was my children's primary caregiver for 7 years when their mother filed for divorce. The papers she filed accused me of 13 things which included alcoholism to sexual deviancy (and 11 things in between). None of it was true, but I had no evidence, it was my word against hers. This is the american court system.

My marriage and career went horribly wrong and staying home with my children was a big part of that. I justify it with the bond I made with my two oldest children. I still have regrets about my career and not bonding with my youngest child, but we can't have it all, right?

This is what I call court ordered poverty. I once heard it described as the custodial parent gets to live on retail dollars while the non-custodial lives on discount dollars. Yes, the person I knew was a college student. The crime was just stupidity, but it was classified a felony. He was able to reduce this to a gross misdemeanor because of the circumstances. He spent weekends in jail for two summers. I feel it worked out for society because he now has a master's degree and is making significant contributions to society.

I often say things will not change for men until society stops seeing them as paychecks. The recipient is irrelevant. Women have their own issues with how society sees them, and things won't change (even for men) until that changes, either. Men and women are intertwined that way.
