Me (soon, hopefully). This fall or next spring I'm going to enroll in my university's law enforcement academy, then apply at one of the local police agencies. I'd either stay at one of those agencies if I really like it, or possibly move on to joining the state troopers after gaining some experience at a smaller department.

Agreed. I've been volunteering with the local police department for a couple of months now, and see it as a great way to build connections, in addition to working on certain skills (hope to become a cop after college). For example, sometimes we work security at events, and that's a way to practice the verbal skills needed to de-escalate a conflict.
