There's a clear connection for black men and gay men. Black people in general face serious double standards, being seen as more violent, criminal, risky, etc. the same is true of men, and when those men also happen to be black, the effect is multiplied. I remember seeing a post on here of an old cartoon that encouraged women to be careful around black men, or that you can never be too cautious around them. That's very similar to the "all men are potential rapists" attitude. Being both black and …

Oh, I thought those were very encouraging responses! The student seemed to steer well away from discussions of gender, and the intent of the question seems not to have been to raise those issues. Only at the very end did they bring up the UK's lopsided definitions of rape and sexual assault, and even then they seemed to lament it. I thought it was a good post. Very much in line with what one of our subscribers might have said.

I think you're right that anti-feminist posts constitute a very large portion of what gets posted here, but that does not mean they state or imply that feminism is the cause of men's rights issues. The reason I want to be really clear about that point, especially when we talk to people on other subs, is that the feminists earn a lot of brownie points from the general population when they slander us by saying "They think evil scary feminists want to take away their rights!", or even "They think w…

It's appalling how consistently wrong this was. I've never seen a single up voted comment here supporting any of that slide of fake issues, and we certainly don't think women or feminism are to blame for our problems. It's traditional gender norms, society, and the law. I've never seen anybody claim otherwise here. The reason we always wind up in arguments with feminists is because they've deluded themselves into thinking we want to take away their rights or hurt women. It's completely pig-heade…

What? That's not helpful at all. Maybe bounty hunting used to be "men's work" before the industrial revolution, but we have guns now. These bounty hunters were armed with tasers and guns loaded with rubber bullets. Once you have weapons multiplying your ability to threaten and apply force, simple gender differences and physical strength don't matter as much. Edit: By this I mean to point out that they're clearly dangerous and harmed this man just as much, if not more, than he would have been har…

How is it a different set of rights? It's not like the right to marriage is a 'gay right'. It's a civil right that I think should be afforded equally to gay couples and straight couples. When a straight couple get married, are they exercising gay rights? When a straight person isn't fired from their job for being straight, are they exercising gay rights? Obviously not. They're all exercising their own, universal, equal, civil rights. The gay rights movement is about equality, not creating new ri…

You really hit the nail on the head. This is a really sneaky, unapologetic attempt to coopt a legitimately important issue for gay men, and make it into some parody of an issue for insecure girls on taxis.

Then don't complain about the one that did get reported. Complain about the thousands not getting reported. Do you have a problem with gay men or something?

Not only that, but one of the greatest injustices nonheterosexual men have endured under our society's sex/gender/sexuality system is social emasculation; the "traditional" mindset (which is in fact shared by a not-insignificant number of feminists, at least on this issue) sees gay men as "honorary women" and thus is probably more likely to see a gay man's suffering as something to sympathize with, rather than something to scoff at followed with a call to "man up." This is so true. I'm gay, and …

I always think these posts are terrible. We don't need to give people the impression that this guy (fictional guy) is representative of us. He called two gay men "faggots" and then made them into total stereotypes. That is not acceptable here. This is not another case of 4chan using the word "fag" in a jocular manner, OP is using as a slur. I hate that. I get that. I can see how that might make sense. But feminists are really absurdly out of touch with gay men. I don't feel like they really understand gay issues, and in a lot of ways, the struggle against heteronormativity is what they would call "patriarchal". To use a good example, Glee used to be pretty heteronormative. The only gay character was extremely effeminate. Society does not repress gay men because they act effeminate, their femininity is a result of repression. Because society tel…

Wait. We need to remember, there are a lot of men who sell sex as well. The whole market isn't exactly small either. As with all prostitution, it's not necessarily a job, it's a transaction. For example, if you sell a TV on eBay, that doesn't make you a TV salesman. It does make you one in the eyes of the police if TV selling is illegal, however. I say this because selling sex isn't exactly rare. I have a friend (male) who went on a dinner date with a 50-something man and got paid for the dinner…

I hate when people like this sanctimonious idiot talk about being gay-friendly in the same breath as they talk about being woman-friendly. I'm gay, and I hate the association. I'm not a woman. Class me with the men, with the oppressors, if that's what you think they are. But classing me with women is pretty damned heteronormative. It supports the idea that heterosexuality is related to masculinity. It isn't. Gay men are just as much men as straight men, and a culture which only understands mascu…

It's not necessarily a matter of who's drunk and who isn't. Erections are completely involuntary physiological reactions to stimuli. Many women are capable of overpowering many men. There is no reason why it can't happen, and be just as bad as when a man rapes a woman. According to the CDC, actually, women force sexual intercourse on men just as frequently as men force sexual intercourse on women. Source: http://puu.sh/XPt2 Plus, this guy is young. It's an awareness day! For fuck's sake, of course there are far fewer females with HIV/AIDS. It's not something you hear about very often. What's wrong with raising awareness? Most HIV/AIDS awareness and programs are geared toward men. As a gay man, I've come into contact with a lot of programs and campaigns, gotten a bunch of leaflets, and gone to a bunch of lectures all about AIDS, and I was offended that they only mentioned men. That is usually a source of stigma for men, being associated wit…

How can an individual be guilty of body-policing? Doesn't that imply some kind of authority, or organization? I could understand calling out a newspaper or business for body-policing, but when a single individual engages in body-policing, it is called taste. And that is something we all have a right to. However, when an individual has such a taste, or holds such an opinion as disliking women with body hair, their opinion may be wrong. You can certainly condemn it. I will grant that. But the way …

This is a problem that is extremely common in movements and ideologies that have both social and political goals. People have got to realize that words like "right", "justice", "freedom", and "inequality" mean very different things depending on whether you're talking about society or about the state. I'm not saying that freedom, rights, and justice are more important politically than socially. That is a different question. But if you're a politician or political activist, you'd better be using t…

/r/MensRights01/10/12 03:59 PM

I see your sarcasm, but look. What's wrong with getting drunk? Let's not get too carried away. Rape is still the fault of the rapist. Our goal is simply to say that females can be rapists too, and men can be rape victims. And that in fact, the statistics would indicate that the rates are roughly equal.
/r/MensRights01/10/12 11:45 AM

This. Here's a neat chart from the CDC National Intimate Partner Violence Survey. The number of cases of women forcing sexual intercourse on men is equal to the number of men forcing sexual intercourse on women. I try not to use the word rape anymore. I just say "forcible sexual intercourse". Feminists can't do shit about that terminology.
/r/MensRights01/10/12 11:42 AM

Okay, but we need to be careful about what we put up. It shouldn't really be overtly confrontational or MR-related. We want to play the victim-card, and say they're ignoring people who've been taken advantage of by women, and that everybody knows males are less likely to report rape than females. This is a good enough reason to put up our posters, instead of screaming "Sexism!" I think what would be good is if OP offered to the Students Union to put up some posters about female rapists. Wouldn't…

Would you be equally disconcerted by a very strong woman? Like a 6'2" WNBA star with a concealed-carry license? If yes, then maybe you need to reconsider your fears. Young boys are not raised to fear or be wary of people who are stronger than they are. Why should you be? The great strength of our species is not our physical size, but our intelligence. A willing human is more of a threat than a strong human. If someone wants to hurt you, your physical size probably won't mean much. The difference…

We're still mainly liberals. I think they usually oppose us because they think we're bigoted conservative white men who think women should stay in the kitchen. When they find out we're young, educated, liberal Westerners, who hate gender norms just as much as they do, we get sympathy.
/r/MensRights25/08/12 04:59 PM

This. Just state the issues, don't introduce people to the actual names and terminology, unless we're absolutely sure they'd support us. I take it the goal was to draw users to this sub? They're not really looking for relationships more than I would. One was just trying to get her fuck-count in the double digits before she started her PhD. Any guy can get some girl, andjust as easily. I have female friends who use blendr, which is the straight equivalent of grindr. Girls only have to have a vagina to get laid? So a guy is basically always willing to have sex with a girl? No reason not to, since she has a vagina? Where have I heard that before? Oh wait. Feminists. Guys are just as picky, just as discerning, and just as in control of their decisions about who to sleep with as women are. The people who say all a girl needs is a vagina are the same people who say men can't get raped because they can't not consent. If a man can have reason to not consent to sex…

The study cited in the article serves to debunk your personal experience in this case, whatever side of the planet you're on. Either way, I think a stronger point than Zerbu's would be the virgin shaming that occurs against men. If women are shamed for having too much sex, men are correspondingly, if not more, shamed for having too little or no sex. Whether or not someone is a loser for being a virgin at the age of 25 is largely a factor of their gender. If they are female, they are classy or in…

I guess I don't believe the patriarchy is very "patriarchal", when I hear my feminist friends lay it all out. I made great progress with them when it finally dawned on me that they thought I liked the patriarchy as they described it, and vehemently denied it. They usually rank things like the fact that men are regarded as workers and women as housewives as part of the patriarchy. Same with regarding men as violent, and women as harmless. Or men as rapists and women as victims. These are all what…
/r/MensRights14/08/12 04:44 AM

Absolutely. I mean, from what we see on here all the time, feminism is some mainstream movement, but really they're just a bunch of wackos in the intelligentsia that the rest of society typically cringes at. Let's hope that doesn't happen to us.
/r/MensRights13/08/12 08:43 PM

No, I disagree. I think the movement is far too "alternative" sounding to benefit from labeling. Nor do I think there is anything good about people knowing about the movement. I only want them to know about the positions. What I want is for our political ideals to be popularized and accomplished, and that is all. I don't think very much connection between them and any groups is necessary when nearly everyone already supports us on them. This is true both in my personal experience, and in the exp…
/r/MensRights13/08/12 06:36 PM

Really? The MRM strikes me as really antagonistic towards gender roles in general, and especially the gender roles specified for men. I've seen three posts regarding the "oppression" of not allowing men to wear skirts in the last two months make the front page of /r/MR, and nearly every post about misogyny and misandry and the roles and norms expected of men in our society winds down to a condemnation of the traditional family and the breadwinner ideal. I think the issue is far more complicated …

Why would you think this was a conservative sub? I got the exact opposite expression. It's a bunch of young liberal white guys discussing the role of gender in politics and society, for Christ's sake, why on Earth would that attract conservatives? No, don't throw up your hands just yet. If she says that gendered behaviors are socially constructed (very common position, and one we have no problem accepting), these choices are coming about because gender norms themselves are making women freely disadvantage themselves. So why not talk about the gendered behaviors that men exhibit? If they are just as bad, then they are just as badly in need of remediation. The primary one here is the crime rate of men compared to women. I know many will arg…

The reason I think there are a lot of gays here is because I've come across a lot of people openly and unabashedly identifying themselves as gay, each one seeming perfectly comfortable doing so, not expecting any backlash. On top of that, the mods seem to talk about /r/lgbt and especially /r/ainbow as if there's considerable dialogue and mutual readership between us and them. I upvoted you because I don't think our opposition to this image is what you think it is. I think you can agree with me when I say that whatever feminists mean by "patriarchy", the results of patriarchy seem highly un-patriarchal. Does it oppress women more? I don't really think so, at least not in this day and age. The sexual norms given to us by society are a detriment to both sexes, and I don't think we will gain anything by competing in some kind of oppression olympics. Does it put men in in…

I didn't put that because it's not really a sexual orientation. I'd imagine that would go under the sex question. Male, Female, Transsexual, Other. I guess I've never met any "others", but who knows. We may have a big tent audience here.
/r/MensRights02/08/12 11:27 PM

Sexual orientation? Homosexual Heterosexual Bisexual Other I say this because I'm gay, and I've gotten the impression there are a significant number of gays here. That, and none of my gay male friends, even the queerest of the queer, like feminism. What's so bad about her? Look, here are some positives, from what I'm seeing in the article: Circumcision: She thinks the discussion of male genital mutilation should be the same as the discussion of female genital mutilation. And it's not that no man knows with terrible certainty what it's like to be a rape victim -- one in five females and one in 71 males in the United States are the victims of rape False. More men are victims of rape in the United States than women. I think this is mostly accounted for by prison rape, which is usually left out of consideration because people like to say the prisoners deserve it. That's just as dumb as saying women who have sex with multiple partners deserve rape. It's barbaric. I d…
/r/MensRights16/07/12 07:39 PM

I don't see how the sexual double standard permits more freedom to men than women. There's slut shaming for girls, sure. They can't have too much sex or they're denigrated. But men are subjected to virgin shaming. They can't have too little sex or they're denigrated. "Sad" and "loser" are mainly gendered insults for this reason.
/r/MensRights16/07/12 07:22 PM

How can this person say men's rights groups are homophobic? Not that it matters, but I've always had the impression there were quite a lot of gays in this sub. On top of that, are there even a lot of conservatives here? I don't think it really matters one way or another, as above, but I guess I've just gotten the exact opposite impression of this subreddit. Yeah, I have. I actually get more upset by the things women say than the things men say. My straight male friends usually don't say anything about it, or joke about it. "That's what HE said" jokes, and all that. I like that. It's no problem. But it seems like I'm not viewed as a real man by many of my female friends. My male friends probably wouldn't hang out with me much if they felt that way, which probably explains why they resist the urge to treat me like that. Females, on the other hand, ar…

Why is alimony necessary at all? If they're both productive members of society, both can fend for themselves, just as if they weren't married anymore. Mind blowing, right? I can understand child support, but alimony kind of defeats the purpose of divorce. You want to be "not married"? Make it so you're not married. No legal, romantic, or financial connection. Nada. There are distinctions in this thread (below) between good and bad, and right and wrong. Right and wrong refer to deontological ethics, where the moral status of an act is in question. The question is settled based on the nature of the principle of justification it follows, and the principles it violates. For example: Circumcision and female genital mutilation are deontologically equal in that they both violate the same ethical principle of respecting the rights of individuals to make choices ab…

Hey, this article is actually gold for us. It's literally a list of ways in which women are privileged in our society. Even the stuff like the hygiene thing. Feminists are all of the time interpreting the long standing pattern of women choosing low-paying jobs as being a socially constructed behavior, so they can still blame it on "the patriarchy". I guess another way I think your model is deficient is how little difference there is between gays acting in a masculine way, and gays acting in an effeminate way. They both receive the same kind of abuse, and the same kind of objectification. Even still, consider the difference in treatment between your acting masculine, and your acting effeminate. There's not much difference. It's less about what gender norms you're violating, and more about what role society has relegated you to because of wh…

While I think that's also true, I don't see why it has to be. Or why it has to be the only factor. Success objectification happens because that's the way most women think people should be objectified, just like how sex objectification happens because that's how men tend to think people should be objectified. Men even tend to present themselves as sex objects (for example, on Grindr, most users have several photos ready to send, of their ass, dick, torso, face, etc. They present themselves like c…

That is considerably less defensible. Are you a humanist? If you are, I think you need to explain how you justify moral realism on that worldview. If you are a Christian, or accept anything similar to Christian ethics, I think you're morally obligated to accept homosexuality, and love homosexuals. You think homosexual sex is disgusting? Great. I think heterosexual sex is disgusting. What of it? You think it contributes nothing to society? Heterosexuality contributes nothing to society. Oh, maybe…

So you disapprove of homosexuality for religious reasons? Read Christianity, Social Tolerance, and Homosexuality, by John Boswell. He wrote another book called Same-Sex Unions in Pre-Modern Euroope, which is similarly enlightening. I consider these required reading for anyone who wishes to consider the issue of homosexuality through the lens of Christianity.

I think that's a weird excuse, and I don't really believe you. For theological reasons (forgive me, reddit). There's no such thing as an immoral act that can't be avoided. Otherwise there's no point calling it a sin or a temptation. Bigotry is wrong. Therefore you can choose not to do it. If you really thought what you felt was an immoral way to feel, then you'd take steps to fix it. You'd behave like it wasn't the case. Take Pascal's advice: going through the motions as if you were sincere is t…

Yeah, you can be honest about your opinions. That doesn't mean they're not stupid opinions. If you're gonna be true to yourself, cool. I'll be true to yourself too. You're an asshole.

I'm glad this is getting attention on here, and I'm glad to see that MR cares about this issue. This is one of the massive problems that men face that simply can't be thrown under the rug. Calling someone gay shouldn't be hurtful. Who the hell cares if you are? There's nothing "immasculine" about homosexuality. I agree: The whole idea that it's an "insult" is what's insulting. I think this is all due to the objectification that men face in our society. Men are objectified just as much as women, …

It doesn't need to bother you in order for it to be wrong. And it doesn't need to be about you for it to bother you. I don't get mad when someone calls me gay because I'm hurt. That would imply that I thought "gay" was a bad thing to be called. On the contrary, I'm mad because they do think "gay" is a bad thing to be called. Fuck that.

A lot of things are quite heteronormative. It's not something you'd notice unless you were, you know... not hetero yourself. Believe me, I don't get pissed at gay jokes, and I don't really get pissed when people use the word "faggot". But there's all kinds of subtle stuff just buried all around our society that really hurts.

Definitely a good thing to avoid is the use of the term "men's rights" entirely. Just bring up the issues. Throw out facts. You can build up a massive wall of data and theoretical support for MR without ever labeling yourself. Feminists, for sure, are programmed to explode whenever they hear the words "men's rights", "masculism", "misandry", etc. There's just no need to put a label on it until after you've made your case. Present only facts, yes. But this doesn't mean only taking small bites. Pa…

You hit the nail on the head. MR needs more discussion of this. I had a big debate with two feminist friends of mine, where they claimed that misogyny was the all-pervasive background radiation of our culture, using sex objectification as an example. That's not a bad point. But it's paralleled by equally fundamental and pervasive misandry, in the form of success objectification. I like your point about "loser". It's definitely a gendered insult. Women are rarely called losers.
/r/MensRights09/06/12 06:40 PM

I think men are objectified, but the sexual objectification of men is not the problem. Women are treated as sex objects, where their only personal worth derives from their sex appeal, if they have it. (A feminist will accept this definition) Men, on the other hand, are treated as success objects. They are only valued for their capacity to do, to accomplish, to win, to work. I think this is why things like erectile dysfunction and unemployment are so psychologically crippling for men, while havin…

Wow, this was fast. I'm cut, but I hate hearing stories like that. I don't think women have any right to have an opinion about circumcision, it makes me uncomfortable. I bet it's analogous to how they feel about abortion. That's why I steer away from that topic.

Well, I draw the line at whether or not it is in the interests of the child. Circumcision more often than not occurs for no good reason at all, and is purely cosmetic. It is the kind of body alteration that should not be done without the person's consent. While I don't care that my parents had me circumcised, I care a lot that they thought they had a right to. That's insulting, and it's an egregious lack of respect for my body, my sexuality, and my privacy, regardless of how you skew it. I canno…

Nah, you notice it. The head of your penis becomes dry and toughened without it's natural protection, you have difficulties with sex because of the foreskin's function as a mechanical lubricant (now penetration requires more force and produces friction), and you lose a significant amount of erotic sensation. The appendix serves no recognizable purpose, so removing it to prevent problems it might have makes sense. The foreskin serves a variety of easily recognizable purposes. It's no use asking c…

There's no need to explain this at any great length. It's a simple question. Do we consider the issue of gender equality? Yes. What ELSE would we be considering? Do we think men and women should have equal rights? Yep.

No one wants to ban it completely. Just for infants and for no good reason. I see no reason why a man can't choose to get circumcised when he's old enough to understand the decision he's making, or if it's being done for medical purposes. But yeah, really? JUST removing part of your penis? That's huge. I really can't sympathize with you here. It's just that crazy.
/r/MensRights06/06/12 07:14 AM

No, it doesn't prevent any medical problems. Just because there are medical problems that affect foreskins, and people without them don't face them, doesn't mean circumcision prevents them. You might as well say amputating children's arms prevents them from getting broken arms. It's a moot point. Just because it doesn't cause any pain doesn't mean it's okay. If I cut off your nose, you won't feel any long term pain, and everything will work basically the same in your life. You'll just be missing…

<Are you serious? No, you are not more "aware of" on these issues than the average MRA.> I think what they meant was that they were more knowledgeable than they were before, and now stand with MRA's on those issues. Not that they are more knowledgeable than said MRA's.
