I belive that the biggest investment is the passage to and from Europe. Traveling around here is (relatively) cheap. Ryanair has really cheap flights if you don't mind the service and you can check out Eurail, if you like traveling by train. (You also skip the whole customs thing). Most hostels have female only rooms. They aren't super luxurious, but you can sleep feeling safe. Also, consider going to the less expensive countries.
