All of that is true, but there is a gender pay gap just by looking at the statistics. Women ask for raises less, negotiate less, and ask for less when taking a job, and all of that alone can make a pay gap in jobs that aren't dominated by women or by men. A hospital or oil rig are just a few examples whereas many retail and office jobs are workplaces where a man or a woman could be doing the same job.

But the pay gap is true--in Illinois alone, women earn about 71 cents per every dollar a man earns. And most women are underpaid because they're expected to leave the work force in 2-3 years to have children. But why should women sacrifice pay because they want to have kids later?
