Libgen saved me hundreds in college If it's a fairly common book or some type of technical writing, in my experience, you can google it and a PDF or five should be in the first couple pages. I've found PDFs of many interesting dystopian novels people keep telling me to read and very very useful automotive shop manuals just by doing that. Also if you have a public library near you, they're usually crazy cheap. Sometimes they have more than just books too.

Stupid question but what's the advantage of doing that versus just running your typical linux off a USB drive? Because every distro I've tried does that and won't keep your data on the machine when you're done. Unless you mean tails has some fancy privacy features that actively try to obscure your actions while you use it. I second the proper tower thing. r/buildapc is full of advice on building a PC, but if you are cool with keeping your rig in one place, a real desktop with new parts will wow you, and it's pretty simple to DIY. I had a laptop with super powerful parts (for a laptop) once. An i7-8750H (~50W) and a GTX 1060 (~80W) (Also an Acer, and it had a very annoying storage driver issue) and it got so hot under load that it was very unenjoyable.
