I suspect the reason is medical science wasn't so good back then, and infection of the foreskin could lead to penile necrosis. A lot of old practices like these are rooted in practicality for their age. I bet infections were a lot more common a thousand years ago before we had all the medicines we do now and the surgical technology. Or at least that is the short idea of it (they are still studying the mechanics of it). Right now most of the data is correlations and study, since it's unethical to try to give someone an STI.
