He is still my friend and I will stand by his side whatever is going to happen, writing this did not make me feel better in any way, nor was it intended to make me a better man. I respect his decisions and I'm happy that I can make my own. What I wished him to do and wish everyone else to do is to never let the negative aspects of a relationshop outweight the positive ones.

I can relate to this. The problem is you don't feel comfortable in your own skin. Being drunk turns off all your usual thoughts, not giving a chance to think about if you're being awkward or not. Practice talking to people while you're sober, generally improve yourself until you get confident enough to not be reliant on alcohol. You obviously aren't dependant of it.
