It's not the wrong name, they are two different things. Can there only be one form of power operational at any given time? For instance, how would you define the tools of power used by ruling elites in the US in 1800? Race/ethnicity, gender, and wealth/land ownership seem to all play a part, along with religion, political ideology, geographic location, etc. It's about the tools of power within a political system, not the demographic characteristics of individuals. That said, you are certainly ri…

Thank you, that sounds so earnest lol. You know, I just think about the women in my life (cousins, girlfriend, mother, grandmother) and then I think about what if I had a daughter, how would I raise her? I'd want her to know how her ancestors struggled to give her the options she has. I would want to make sure she is strong, educated, and able to do anything she wants without anyone else defining or constraining her. I've been afforded that opportunity so far, and would want the same for her.

First of all, don't feel like an ostracized leper. You say this is a group of old college friends. Do you still hang out with them, or is this only on Facebook? I say brush it off. If you feel like someone hates you, don't be friends with them. You deserve to surround yourself with people that make you feel better about yourself, not worse! A woman I know created a topic about misandry in response to something Rush Limbaugh said. I made a comment that first-wave feminism said some "strange" thin…

Okay, you didn't make the original statement, so it's a bit confusing for me. On the one hand, I see people in MRM refer to the movement as criticizing feminism and self-identifying as anti-feminists, but on the other hand, you are saying it is a label placed on (people like Ferrell) by feminists. Which is it? Is it an insult or is it a self-determined stance?

Thank you for beginning to address some of the content I present. This was very insightful. I agree with with most of what you have said here. The problem we fight against is that most of us have little choice but to live traditional gender roles, or worse yet undefined, vague roles which are forced on us by feminists and government alike for their own benefit. In my experience, I can't remember ever being forced into a role by feminists. Rather, I grew up with parents who espoused traditional r…

What does it mean to be anti-feminism? Is this necessary for one to be an MRA? Farrell, for example, comes from feminism. Does he classify himself as an anti-feminist?

reductio ad absurdum Yeah, I think that's essentially right. Venker is presenting an absurd, untenable representation of feminism to frame the discussion of MRM. But I'm not clear on what is funny about it.

I'm afraid I can't read your mind, so I can only work with the words you type and not the intent or supposed content behind them. The definition of content: the substance or material dealt with in a speech, literary work, etc., as distinct from its form or style. "the outward form and precise content of the messages" synonyms: subject matter, subject, theme, argument, thesis, message, thrust, substance, matter, material, text, ideas Men's rights is about facts not feelings; it's one of things wh…

This would be more helpful if you didn't cherry pick to criticize but rather engaged with the content of what I'm saying. Perhaps it is clear to you that the term "femtards" is directed towards feminists and not women in general, but, being unfamiliar with the parlance, it wasn't clear to me. Rather than state that, and actually address the existence or non-existence of woman hating as an extreme type of comment that one may find on a forum such as this, and the relation of this type of extreme …

Sure it does, maybe you're looking at the wrong stuff. A lot of it is in academic journals and libraries, so maybe it's behind a paywall. The narrative portraying men as actors and women as acted upon has been criticized by feminists for decades now. That's what the whole third-wave was about! That narrative just isn't the modern understanding of patriarchy. You've pointed out that it's logically untenable, and feminist scholars have been exploring this for a long time. EDIT: my request for "ser…

Thank you for that link. It was well thought out, nuanced, and clear. It gave a rational understanding of why someone might become an anti-feminist, following the (maybe) hypothetical trajectory of someone who rejects gender norms, yet is thrust back into mainstream patriarchy by being rejected by feminists. It makes sense. I still don't see calling myself an anti-feminist. When you draw the divide between what feminism says and does, it seems too black and white for me. Not only are there a mil…

Okay, first off, saying that my "critical thinking [will sharpen] up" is incredibly condescending, and a little bizarre given that you seem to have missed my entire point. You have cherry picked an example where I bring up an extreme that I've noticed within MRM forums. Nowhere do I say that this viewpoint is representative of MRM, or anti-feminists, those critical of feminism, or any permutation thereof. I also don't make the absurd correlation that hating feminists means one must hate all wome…

They probably got it from the lysistrata. Pretty old idea really.

Are you sure you linked me to an article? This link goes to a tumblr made of bullet points that list various out-of-context quotes.

Shouldn't anyone be allowed to deny anyone else sex for any reason? Isn't that like basic freedom and control over your own body? If not, what would the exception be?

It does sound a lot like feminism. This is where Ferrell got his theoretical foundation. I guess I'm reading a different kind of feminism, but I haven't encountered a lot of man-hating or outrage from anyone that can be taken seriously. I'm very new at reading about MRM, so I found a lot of great ideas in feminist literature that helped me challenge my own ideas as a man and about gender roles more broadly. So I guess you might see me as biased, but I think that in academia there is a lot of ver…

Through ignorance and in some cases misandry, men and boys are in crisis. In the area of due process for men and boys concerning sexual assualt and rape accusations there is a tectonic shift happening that is hurting men and boys while also trivializing sexual assualt and rape of men and women. Sorry but I found this too vague and also unclear. How is it hurting the accused while at the same time trivializing the crime? Additionally, this didnt really respond to my comment at all. I read through…

So, given that drugs weren't involved, there must be more to these accusations if they are 'sexual assault'. Why would you do anything with someone that was in a sloppy or incoherent or black out state? Perhaps I did misunderstand your point, but if you get where I'm coming from, maybe you can answer my queries. I guess I just don't understand the backlash to college women being concerned about rape and sexual assault. I've known plenty of women in college and took their word for it that some gu…

From the feminism that I've read, saying that 'women are always the victims' or 'men are always responsible' is just reifying patriarchal gender norms and stereotypes--it's the opposite of feminism.

Blame for what exactly? Are there people who just say 'oh he got me drunk/roofied me' without any other accusation of abuse? Wouldn't you agree that if you're with someone who is sloppy drunk you should watch out for them and make sure to not do anything that could be construed as abuse?

This is an important point you're making, and I agree that gender roles confine both sexes and often hurt through expectations. The funny thing is, I got this idea from feminists (particularly the idea that men are hurt and restricted as well by gender norms), and I think historically it has been introduced to other fields by feminist deconstruction that started to analyze concepts of gender roles that had been reified in society. I hope I don't get slammed for this, and I hope you understand th…
