Although even that becomes a problematic definition when you realise that Humanism was originally a movement within Christianity - what you're describing is technically Secular Humanism, and religious Humanism is definitely a thing. 2	"What feminism taught me about rape" Except that viewing oneself as a survival rather than a victim is in fact the first stage of learning to cope with a great trauma. 1	Oxford updated their "rapist" definition to "...typically a man". No, sexual assault does not carry life. Sexual assault carries a variety of different sentences depending on the exact crime. If it involves penetration with a body part or object, or if it involves making a person engage in sexual intercourse against their will then it carries a life sentence. The thing is, the jury doesn't need to declare anyone innocent: Due process dictates that everyone is innocent until proven otherwise, that is they're innocent before they're declared not guilty, and innocent afterwards. I'd tend to argue that "not proven" is actually quite a good thing, at least from a psychological perspective: guilty should be a decision made only if all reasonable doubt has been dispelled, but juries are liable to find someone guilty because despite the presence of reasonable doubt, they think there's too much doubt for innocent (which is irrelevant, but your average man on the street doesn't understand due process). The alternative crimes are sexual assault, sexual assault by penetration, or the wonderfully encompassing "causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent". Unfortunately the sentences aren't entirely equal - rape carries a maximum sentence of life, as does sexual assault with penetration or causing sexual activity where penetration is involved.
