The amount of people doesn't make conventions cramped so much as slow. Think of traffic jams- the cars aren't touching, but there's enough of them that traffic is slow anyway. Convention crowds are like that. sweaty I live in urban Australia, so any convention sites I've been to are fully air-conditioned. Latin and German had the same word but different definitions, and since those two languages were what combined to form English, one definition had to go so the word could be used effectively. It's just the way the cookie crumbled. You can't have a word with contradictory meanings (both 'male' and 'male and female').
