Personally, before I was married I was most likely to either a) date guys I already knew in some capacity (for example, we met in a campus organization) b) date guys I met through mutual friends or c) maybe use online dating cautiously. A guy I don't know at all approaching me in public would feel pretty unnerving given that 99% of those interactions in my experience end badly (street harassment - a man yelling bitch or slut at me because I didn't smile when they told me to smile at them, etc. H…

Female here. If a guy asked me out and I told him immediately that I wasn't interested, the absolute best response would be, "Ok, no problem" with a smile. That would make me feel at ease. How you respond when she says she's not interested can really have an impact. (Not that I know how this played out in this particular situation and of course I don't know this particular girl - but in case it ever happens in the future).
