I think it is more of a ideological position to think that we can't make it work with the rest of these services. I personally think the cost of those services are so high because the state is involved. Ideally as in all things competition brings out the best for consumers. The reason medical services exceed peoples ability to pay is because of the insurance industry that is now mandated by law. Traditionally the doctor could only charge what a patient could pay or they just didn't get the business. Mandatory centralized systems can charge what ever the entire tax base can afford to pay which severely distorts the price for services.
