Yeah I suspect that is what OP was alluding to, but even without extreme options like suicide or theft you can always keep rolling the dice with new jobs new cities etc. Maybe different circumstances will be worse than your current situation helping you appreciate what you had, usually they won't be much better but sometimes they are, and for those feeling trapped it could be worth it.
