Most lawyers now charge a consult fee to see them. Sucks to drop $300 or $400 to find out they are not someone that you want to retain. As well as if either of you gave up career opportunities and if there are kids involved Ultimately each party should figure out the mostly likely outcome if the divorce went to trial, make your arguments for your position and negotiate towards an outcome that avoids trial and a long drawn out process.
