The female prepuce can create heath problems, too. Just like the foreskin can. But in both cases these health problems are extremely rare (affecting less than 2% of the adult male population), and easily treatable by other means than cutting off part of your genitals. Well it is likely that this map is under-estimating how many boys are still being circumcised. Can confirm. Study published this year (2022) concluded after sampling a huge number of young men that: non-therapeutic circumcision in infancy or childhood did not appear to provide protection against HIV or other STIs in males up to the age of 36 years. Rather, non-therapeutic circumcision was associated with higher STI rates overall, particularly for anogenital warts and syphilis.

Yeah your case was completely different in another way, besides the all-important fact that you consented to it. You also would have received anesthesia and pain relief. Until the late 1990s, it was common for infant circumcisions to be performed without any anesthesia or pain relief, because “babies won’t remember the pain.” Yes. Seriously.

I don’t even buy the UTI argument, honestly. Because the foreskin is still fused to the glans during infancy, it effectively serves as an extension of the urethra, which should make UTIs even less likely in baby boys than they already are.

I too was raised Jewish, and I think it should be completely illegal with no exemptions for “religious practice.” My parents’ religion did not give them the right to amputate part of my genitals. Sometimes children need to be protected from their own parents. Circumcision is just one example.

Funny, why are all these studies promoting circumcision always conducted by Americans? And why does the US, a country which promoted universal circumcision of all men for decades, have higher average rates of HIV transmission than EU countries, which have a far lower rate of circumcision? HOW INTERESTING. It’s almost like circumcision isn’t actually effective or necessary to prevent HIV transmission, and yet Americans doctors are intent on proving that it is. Why?
