I never got around to watching Buffy, but my friend was trying to get me to watch Pretty Little Liars when there is straight up teenage grooming going on (doesn’t Aria end up with her HIGH SCHOOL teacher??). I couldn’t continue watching lol, and only after I found FDS did I start recognizing these problematic tropes and female character development.

I completely agree, I don’t think LoTR was a good example since like you said, female characters weren’t even written in to the narrative. In our discussion though we talked about more contemporary Hollywood ‘bro’ movies, like Will Ferrell and Seth Rogan movies. Barf.

I think it’s the insecurity of men who fear that you might care about something else more than you care about them. These guys don’t want us girls with personalities and interests/hobbies because they want to be the center of attention and want to monopolize our time and effort.

I just explained the Bechdel test to my friend last night, after discussing lord of the rings. It’s so sad how many popular movies fail the test, because female characters are accessories in those stories. Of course they’re unlikeable, very few are fully fleshed out characters.

Yeah unfortunately there’s always enough pick-me’s around willing to put up with this kind of behavior. That’s how this scenario keeps getting perpetuated. It’s a nice sentiment to say we can ice these boys out but until EVERY woman starts seeing their worth, it’ll keep happening because these guys don’t care.

That’s what gets me about this. Her concerns are so valid and honestly heartbreaking, but it’s not being portrayed as a feminist stance. It’s being shown as a joke, like she’s the bad guy in this scene and you’re supposed to agree with Will.

My ex used to absolutely torment my cat, would chase him around and yell at him. The first time I caught him, he said “that’s how I play with my dog”. Ok sir but that’s not how my cat wants to be treated, and the second time I caught him doing it I told him to gtfo with no regrets. My cat comes first.
