TO me this begs the question, what if so many girls and women are abusive that the solution of "just break up with them" leaves the man on a never-ending "single" quest to find something that doesn't exist? (A non-abusive women?) Sure there will always be some non-abusive women, but it seems to me there is not enough supply to meet demand. If current levels of abuse are any indicator...

You're doing the right thing... I hate to say to be careful, because I don't think you should have to be. And when I was a kid 20 years ago, the culture was different, and I was able to enjoy the company of adults in a less paranoid way. I remember in particular I would go to the school crossing guard's house regularly, and we would play card games. We would do this very often. He was much older. Of course he never did anything inappropriate. I must have been between 9 and 12.

It isn't easy to know, because it isn't usually said outright. Its more about body language, and especially facial expression. Its often in the eyes. I do remember some specific cases... When I was about 20 or 21? I asked out a girl who was 18... Holy hell, her and her entire group of friends never talked to me again, made specific comments of me being a predator, and gave clear, glaring looks. My reputation among others to whom rumors were spread was also permanently ruined.
