One thing that China is doing (relatively) right is the comparatively low male suicide rate. In addition to the fact that the overall suicide rate is much lower in China than in the US, the gap between men's suicide rate and women's suicide rate is "only" 1.4x. 40% higher suicide rate is still pretty bad. But by way of comparison, in the US it is a whopping 4 times higher! In fact, the gender gap in suicides in China is the 6th lowest in the entire world. So that's one positive thing.

Is any kind of conscription beneficial to the well-being of men? I would argue that women being enslaved with the expectation to die, even if it were on an equal basis with men, does not equal progress for men. There is conscription, but aside from a few well-publicized mistakes, conscripts aren't getting sent to the front lines. They fill their front lines with guys who are enticed with large signing bonuses, which they get immediately, and large salaries. Some guys still go, for the money and for fun.
