They are fed the 'it's the inside that matter' kool-aid It is, to a point. People age. People get fat. A genuinely nice person to be around that has a lot in common with me is a hell of a lot more attractive than a 10/10 hottie that doesn't have a thought of her own, or anything in common with me.

Well, it certainly has nothing to do with actual beauty I can say that for sure. I've seen people from all over the spectrum call themselves beautiful. The common factor usually is being so far up your own ass, and you still can't see shit.

I'm fairly sure, that like everyone, he surrounds himself with like-minded people. This would only serve as a positive in his circle of friends, else the offended party filters themselves out. It's not a behavior specific to any one group, it's human nature.
