Because unless you're working some minimum wage Joe-Job, most companies nowadays do cursory background checks that will show military service. Even basic background checks include a list of Social Security contributors, so anyone you've legally worked for is going to show up. Not to mention the gap in your employment that you'll have to account for if you leave off your time in the military.

Yes, it's worse than dropping out of school or quitting a job. That's not even up for debate. You sign a contract and take an oath, and then decide to say fuck it and walk out on your unit. Your unit that's counting on you, in a lot of cases, to do your job so someone doesn't get killed. You walk out on them and force them to cover your slack? Yeah, that's a lot worse than dropping out of college or quitting some job.

That's not even a little bit true. To get a Bad Conduct Discharge (BCD), or a Dishonorable Discharge, you have to be convicted at Court-Martial, and you can only get a Dishonorable Discharge from a General Court-Martial. Meh. All they usually do to anyone in that situation anyway, is kick them out. Usually they get a Battalion Level Article 15, then when that's over they shitcan them back to civilian life with an OTH (Other Than Honorable). Unless you're deployed or in a combat zone, they almost never prosecute deserters.
