Anything by Billie Holiday has always been a go to for me, her voice is haunting. But her final album, Lady In Satin, recorded when she was very ill, has quite a few "torch songs" on it. Also, Ani Difranco is just, boom. Not A Pretty Girl and Joyful Girl have been my personal anthems for decades. I'm most familiar with her mid to late nineties work, but i introduced her to my niece and I am assured the quality is still there.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
