Hurt people, hurt people. It's one of the big difficulties in running any forum with subjects like this one. There is no easy answer, either, other than constant, strong moderation, which is genuinely hard to do right, and honestly a pretty thankless job most of the time. This isn't presented as an excuse, just noting the reality of things. Best you can do is hit the report button when it's too egregious.

Fantastic! Thank you. :) Tangentially related, but you'd probably enjoy the Tasting History channel over on YouTube, if you aren't already familiar. Lots of fun historical dishes, and the production quality is top-notch.

That sounds really interesting. Do have any favorites you can link? I love seeing how what we eat has changed over time.

It happened to me a while back, after I posted (I guess for the first time?) here with some friendly life advice to someone who was asking for opinions. ::shrug:: so be it.

FWIW, I agree with you. I think it's great if it's something for a hobby, but more than once I've been gifted something that I didn't want Conveniently lined up with something the gifter wanted done for them There's no beating around the bush, that's lame. Now, that being said, I've also been given tools that I really wanted, but couldn't justify the $, and the gift-giver knew me, knew my hobbies, and wanted to make me happy. Those kinds of thoughtful gifts make me smile every time I use the too…

This principle is called Blackstone's Ratio, FWIW.

FWIW, I agree with you. I think back to my parents' relationship- she was a housewife, he a diplomat, but they worked as a team, and her management of diplomatic affairs was absolutely contributing to their mutual success as much as his work at the embassy. They had a happy marriage and never divorced, but if they had, she certainly would have been entitled to some degree of financial support while she got her own career going again, because she had materially contributed to their mutual success…

I love gardening. Getting fresh fruit n' veg is nice, but really, I just like nurturing things and watching them grow. It's good for the heart, you know?

Post-puberty? Yes, it sets the foundation from which everything else is built on.

For what it's worth, I'm a guy, and I agree with you. I mean, I also agree with fatgunn in that most of my male friendships are based on mutual interest and shared activities. But in my mind, there are different levels of friendship. And while there are many folks (both men and women) who I would be genuinely happy to run in to on the street for a chat, or even do things together with, the circle that I consider 'real' friends is much smaller and more intimate. And if someone lied to me about wh…

I'd say the majority of the women I know would fall in to that category. If you asked them if they agreed with feminism, they would say yes, but more detailed questioning would show that what they mean is they want equal opportunity for men and women alike.

Interestingly enough, one of the mechanisms proposed by sociologists as to why diverse groups can be more successful is that people care less about potentially offending someone who isn't part of their cultural group in the first place, so the flow of ideas is actually freer.

It's been well established that a somewhat diverse group in the workplace makes the best decisions, vs. a homogeneous one, or one where the members are so different as to be unable to work with one another. However, if you read the studies (here's a brief overview of one of them), you'll find a far more nuanced view. Most of the sociologists conducting this research know very well what a thorny mess this sort of question is to untangle.

I am divorced, but one thing I had even through the dissolution of my marriage was trust in my (ex) wife, even when we were both mad at each other. We managed things without lawyers, and everything is fine. But it was eye-opening to see how exposed to risk I was if she had wanted to cause pain. That was in 2008, and I have not pursued any relationship beyond friendship since then. I am much happier for it.

I am sorry that you and your family went through that. Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us. I am very happy to read that things have worked out for the better as time has passed.

From what I understand, I disagree, but I would be more than happy to read anything you were willing to link my way. Thanks for responding, BTW.

The ideas you are presenting have been discredited. Here's a book that deals with the concept of innate gender that you might fight interesting. Dr. John Money's wiki page. (Dr. Money was the sexologist who claimed that gender differences were not innate.)

My experience reflects what you're saying. I'm a guy that works in IT. I'd say the co-worker sex ratio is about 8:1, men:women. Most of us guys are happy to have female co-workers. Maybe every fifth guy has a real problem with it, stemming from his own insecurities, and makes it suck all around for the rest of us men, and the women. On top of that, (and this consistently surprises me, even though it really shouldn't any more) the other, non-technical women in the office are merciless to the wome…
