I would put this more down to the fact that violence in an increasingly modern world has become far less prevalent and far less acceptable. That's actually very interesting; in the west it's not all that weird or surprising that some women experimented with other women while they were younger. It's practically encouraged via stereotype that women screw around with other women in college whereas with men this sort of thinking does not apply. Often girls are afforded alternate uniforms to wear during the warmer times of year whereas boys are not. Not sure if that's the case for your sons though! Even so you don't hear boys complaining to the extent that girls are about a minor issue that really shouldn't have any place in an academic environment. Agreeable sentiment however I draw the line at placing other children in positions that allow them to easily abuse powers to get their own way. Teachers are with in their rights to correct students. I was extremely impressed by how remained firm about the facts of the statistics no matter how the interviewer tried to reinterpret the meaning; even going so far as to claim that he personally didn't want women in the board room.
