Why? Because, men aren't seen as social equals with women. Knocking her down a peg or two for the kind of insolence you mentioned will get you nowhere today. When I'd come home to visit, my mother's (single) girl friends, who are pushing their late fifties, always asked when they'd be coming to my wedding. I was in my early thirties and didn't know about this group at the time, but once I replied with "there's really no incentive to get married."
