I agree that the kid will be disadvantaged and that the guy is hurting his kid by being absent. "Deadbeat" is usually reserved for men who don't pay child support. It sucks for the kid. Realistically, the mom has no skills or resources to raise a fully functioning member of society by herself, but a dad sticking around when he doesn't want to is likely going to cause a whole new set of problems.
