Alimony length in NJFormer resident with several friends still there. It's up to a judge but for 15 years and she doesn't work... they could nail you to the cross with permanent, depending on circumstances. If she's sick, you have good earning potential and she doesn't, documented infidelity or a criminal record on your side no hers... yeah ouch city. Your OT potential in the future will be irrelevant, sadly it's about established quality of life. If you have kids, you should expect the worst. Child free you may ha… | /r/Divorce_Men | 27/10/22 01:35 AM
Housing Market - Keep your eyes open.I don't know why everyone thinks the next crisis will be exactly like the last one... recessions, dips, opportunities, failures of markets or love... they're never the same. They all happen for very different reasons. The only thing you can do is work on yourself, your financial position, and be prepared. In more ways than just financial. And remain diligent. | /r/Divorce_Men | 21/07/22 07:22 PM
Change in income after mediation, before final judgment? This happened to me also. Except I was the one who got the increase. Typically you sign an MOU, which is NOT legally binding in most states - UNLESS it's notarized. Then that MOU is converted into a Separation Agreement, which IS legally binding and that WILL be filed with the court. And then you have the final dissolution (some states allow this to be done immediately with the Separation Agreement). As long as you haven't signed the Separation Agreement or anything notarized... it may be a dick… | /r/Divorce_Men | 20/07/22 08:40 PM
Thoughts on Depps case? They both lost, she just lost more. Kinda interesting that even for us mortals divorce is often the same way, nobody wins, you can just fight until the other person loses more. His case was worth fighting because it's important to push back and fight when someone tries to claim the mantle of "victim". It gives bad actors pause, and it gives the courts precedent for how to treat these things. But it's a drop of water in a very large pool of legal / cultural impacts. | /r/Divorce_Men | 02/06/22 02:08 PM
coparenting banIt may very well have been. But... at what point is a comment so extreme as to necessitate a ban? The community can argue with him and downvote... is that not sufficient? | /r/Divorce_Men | 13/05/22 10:42 PM
I got a sock today and 60/40 splitIf this is your first motorcycle, don't get anything too powerful. Consider a cleapo used to learn what you like and don't, get basic safety and comfort out of the way... and buy your dream in six months. | /r/Divorce_Men | 25/04/22 10:34 PM
long distance joint custodyYou said "province" so I'm guessing Canada... and that means my American-colored-glasses may be irrelevant. But that's probably not great for a child. However, in the U.S. you can have joint LEGAL custody, which entitles you to 50/50 at a future time, while temporarily allowing a schedule that isn't really 50/50 so as to act in the best interest of the child. I have that because my kids are school age and my ex works on weekends, while I work traditional Mon-Fri. The idea was that her weekday fr… | /r/Divorce_Men | 19/04/22 01:42 PM
what to expect in mediation meeting #1 re:alimonyMediation only works when you're both amicable, or someone has a gun to their head and is willing to sunder something they want in exchange for something they REALLY want. In this case, I think you simply say that you can prove otherwise to some of these claims, and would love the opportunity to shine a light on her dishonesty in court. Judges LOVE getting lied to, especially when you can document it. | /r/Divorce_Men | 04/04/22 06:43 PM
Is Refinance the Only Option When Selling the House (Joint Title)? Two very different things here... who owns the property (title) v. who owns the debt (mortgage). You can relinquish your claim to the property (quit-claim deed). You get removed from the deed and it's hers, clean and simple. And that's the "asset". You CANNOT relinquish your obligation to the debt without a modification (lengthy, and most banks do not offer it) or a refinance (restructure the loan entirely with a new loan). This the "debt". So you can only remove yourself from the asset not the … | /r/Divorce_Men | 24/02/22 07:51 PM
I read this in an article today and it spoke right to me. Can anyone else relate?Sadly yes. I stayed out of guilt. Never cheated, always faithful. That was the vow I took. But I felt so neglected and like my interests always came... maybe 5th? Behind kids (debatably OK), but also behind her work, her family, her friends. I'm not ok coming in 5th. I wanted out and I never had the balls to say it. I couldn't do that to my kids either. Eventually she pushed me away. It was the best gift she ever gave me - a gift I should have given myself long ago. | /r/Divorce_Men | 04/02/22 07:06 PM
Alimony in South CarolinaWe don't know all the circumstances but it seems a little high, and five years feels a little long. Considering your youngest will be 18 at the time... PERHAPS that makes the timeline make more sense. The idea is to give her time to get on her feet and on her own independently... but it's also based on the length of the relationship a bit. Like I said, seems a little generous but... not absolutely absurd. I would try to either have it sunset in two years after she's done with the masters... or g… | /r/Divorce_Men | 02/02/22 04:35 PM
