Medicaid already doesn't cover it in 18 states. Not covering circumcision would also be an easy way for insurance companies to save a little bit of money.

Point being, the rare cases of serious complications are reason enough on their own to abolish the practice. There's no sense in alienating people.

It should be banned and any doctor who practices the procedure should be charged with child abuse and thrown in jail. Unfortunately there is zero chance that will happen. A more realistic goal is to get insurance companies and Medicaid to stop paying for it in the US. If people have to shell out several hundred dollars for pointless surgery that might make them think twice about it.

I'm an uncircumcised guy in the US and no woman I've known has ever been bothered by that. Circumcision rates are also declining, so for a guy born today being uncircumcised will be far more "normal" in the US than it is for my generatin.

Many people on this sub will make the sensitivity argument. I avoid that one because it will invariably draw the anger of people who are at the point in their life where they refuse to consider the possibility that they have been harmed by circumcision. Even if most people haven't been harmed by circumcision that doesn't make it ok. Complications from it are possible, and even if the complication rate is only 1% that's an unacceptable risk for a procedure that has no real benefits.

I don't think that overly inflammatory language is helpful. They don't hack away at your throat when they do a tonsillectomy, nor do they hack at your stomach in order to take your appendix out. That doesn't make either of those surgeries acceptable to do on healthy people. Circumcision is the same, and doing it on infants as a matter of course is as insane as doing prophylactic tonsillectomies on all babies would be.

The evidence about the laughable benefits of circumcision is out there. Trying to convince your wife rationally is certainly the best course of action. If she won't budge you need to put your foot down and refuse to consent to the procedure. Also make it clear to the doctors and the hospital that you do not consent to it. They do help with UTI's, but I think it's about 3000 circumcisions to prevent a single UTI (which is treatable with antibiotics). I believe it's the Canadian healthcare system that has published the numbers to treat for circumcision, if you want to search for that. From what I remember it's 125 circumcisions to prevent one UTI, which is insane. A hundred+ surgeries to prevent one easily treatable infection.
