Crazy that a psychology professor thinks that it's just the number of birthdays that reduce risk taking behaviors that lead to crime. Not, y'know, life experiences allowing people to grow and develop better impulse control. Hell if you take the cryogenic part literally it doesn't even solve the hormones part, since you theoretically thaw at the same biological age as you went under.

At what pont do we stop excusing chauvinism because of something someone completely different did 35 years ago?

Technically white collar here in a STEM job, but with an unusual amount of blue collar trappings as I work at a very small, scrappy company where we all have to get our hands dirty and do some legwork when a 1 ton delivery comes in. It's a nice middle ground that I'm happy to be in, definitely a more straightforward space than purist lefty spaces, but still not nearly as rowdy as a construction job, which I got to briefly experience during college. At work I might feel like people are still obli…

I mean this place feels like an impossible oasis because of how ubiquitous the establishment left's blindness to men has become. Can't really do much populism without half the populace.

Just want to be clarify since I thought "why would anyone even say that?" and re-read an alternative meaning: Are you calling the person you're replying to a pickme? Or Are you just saying you're a tender queer who isn't just a trust fund baby playing socialism at the country club? Because the quotes really make it read like the first option, but I can only imagine any sensible person wanting to pipe up with the 2nd option.

I'm no woman, but I have occasionally seen people here at least claim to be so (it's the internet, y'know, skepticism is mandatory), so you needn't discount the possibility entirely. Regardless I can't provide the validation you maybe want, but hopefully I have something more sustainable than that. I think I agree with the majority of comments here in that the way you talk about yourself makes me believe your self-worth has been crushed to an unhealthy level and that is making everything else so…

Had an inside line to the writing team on the netflix Witcher. Watched the women there resent his popularity, passion and faithfulness to the source material and constantly shit talk him behind his back. It was really enlightening as to how desperately needed it is for guys to have each others' backs, because even someone as likeable as him wasn't enough to stop the jealous sisterhood rumourmill from spinning up once it became clear he wasn't going to simp for them.

I guess it resonates most strongly with the online hermits. To them grass is some mystical treat coupled to the experience of their bimonthly sun exposure. To everyone else it's just frickin' grass.

I think intellectual rigor is great, I’m a trained researcher, but as I’ve progressed through my career, I’ve learned that rigor has to be coupled with story telling and circumstance framing that’s politically and emotionally strategic. I remember feeling like such a fool for believing academia would be free from politicking and social posturing getting in the way of discerning the truth. Seeing it up close and losing that naiveté was a disappointing experience. Always glad to see anyone not inc…

You've just taken the victims from oldschool patriarchy and expanded it from "women" to "everyone" and kept the perpetrators as "men" and the outcome as "oppressing women" you've gone the long way around to get back to "the patriarchy hurts men too" again, and at this point you only need to look at all the tirelessly rehashed reasons why that's bullshit to see that theory needs more work. For a start if you're going to blame heteronormative presumptions affecting gay and trans men on the patriar…

This zero sum game thinking is exactly what the feminists do that we all hate so much but here you are copying them. That's... not... what a zero sum game is, like not even close. You can call me mad over a word if you want, I guess. I was just trying to explain how your phrasing could be read as a weirdly combative and unnecessarily demanding, since you were upset about recieving downvotes instead of the adoration you apparently thought that comment deserved.

Accountability is being held responsible for your duties or obligations. OP had an opinion on male mental health month's placement and you came back with accountability talk about how many resources they have put into celebrating it. Like it's an obligation to buy in before you can offer criticism. If you'd just left the "accountability time" part out it would have just been whatever, but with it you're implying people are shirking an entry fee that doesn't or shouldn't exist. And I didn't say y…

You're probably getting downvoted because that's not accountability, that's just goal post shifting instead of addressing criticism. Would you tell a gay guy he can't have an opinion on pride month unless he has the privilege of being free to celebrate openly? Either OP's points are right or they're not, you don't need or deserve receipts for them to have the right to talk.

It feels like, "I don't hate black people, I hate criminals". They think it's not objectionable, but it's usually painfully obvious that their biases say that both options are one and the same and this is just the safer way to say it.

Worse, the Commission needlessly elected to print the full names of the accusers in its decision, re-victimizing those most harmed by the inappropriate behavior. This not just apathy, it's malice.

Cook said the publishing landscape has changed “dramatically” over the past 15 years as a reaction to the “prevailing toxic male-dominated literary scene of the 80s, 90s and noughties”. Now, “excitement and energy around new and adventurous fiction is around female authors – and this is only right as a timely corrective”. Man I wish it was easier to tell who's trying to cover their ass to avoid being mobbed for straying too far from gynocentrism, and who has a truly broken sense of right and wro…

Keeping track of who and what institutions can be trusted can be key to getting good results. The lack of transparency and the sheer scale of people we have to interact with and keep track of in a modern society make that feel like an almost impossible task though. Even this account, as much as it feels right and my gut says is probably accurate, is just an unverified internet anecdote and doesn't really qualify as good cause to trust anyone. High blood pressure is the silent killer, but it turns out when people finally noticed how bad it really was they made very deliberate efforts to amplify the finding to save further unnecessary suffering. All of the media coverage didn't make dangerous blood pressures any less asymptomatic though.

Algorithm's still aren't foolproof yet. They throw stuff at the wall and see what happens, which sometimes includes throwing an identifiable woman into the "heterosexual sexy" category and seeing how the gooners react to see if it's true. Like I said, I think there may actually be more to the bias than a sex sells weighting, but it would be a departure from precedent if they didn't have at least some component of "show them more of the same, but by someone that they might also be physically attr…

Because that's what tiktok's and YouTube shorts' algorithms notoriously prioritize, heteronormative titilating content is one of the first angles they try on fresh accounts with no marketing data yet. Which if you're looking at predominantly male fandoms, means they try showing you women doing the same thing, but in gym shorts.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates20/04/25 09:41 PM

I'm sure the sex sells angle is a big portion of that YouTube algorithm. But I wonder if that's all, even on the radio and Spotify I've felt like a disproportionate number of female covers of classic male vocals have been pushed in the last few years. I just don't know if that's a publishing bias or a more organic excess of just more women wanting to put out covers lately

It's not that strange to me, just incredibly tragic. I've seen the way men who don't add that caveat get treated sometimes and I'm sure many guys who talk like that have personally experienced it before they learned to talk like that. It's like someone who's been bullied and has no hope of intervention and learns to just say the things that make their tormentors happy. So for a lot of these guys to exist, someones saw a SA victim opening up and thought "I'm going to try to humiliate and berate t…

What exactly do you want from the language barrier thing? I'm already giving you lots of extra leeway for potentially misstating things It's not like you're taking any precaution to avoid jumping to conclusions over language misunderstandings yourself, like the yelling fire thing because you somehow read my comment to be saying that all words are the same when I very clearly defined them as public responses to public statements of opinion, a much more narrow definition than just "words"

I mean who's to say 🤷‍♂️ everybody's internet is curated and editted to some extent so I know my personal experience is by no means representative either, but personally, yes, I see it used that way a lot now. I'm firmly against using terms that are labeled unintuitively or ironically. It's just more trouble than it's worth. Turns out that way too many people take things almost exclusively at face value. Niceguy once upon a time used to mean what you say, like feminism once upon a time used to mean equality. Now their usage has evolved to match the names, feminism is thinly veiled gynocentrism and a niceguy is just a guy who is nice but otherwise uncharismatic or undesirable. You can say they're using…

Yeah, it's true that the vast majority of breakdowns result in self-harm not mass shootings. But the inverse is also kind of true, before a mass shooting happens often someone has been pushed to imploding, so anything that pushes large numbers of people to break does marginally increase the risk mass shootings. I will say that I'm not even sure if even close to half of mass shooters are like that, a very large proportion seem have different, longer term problems like a fascination with death and…

No explicitly I guess but saying blanket stuff like "they're dangerous" and "they refuse reason" certainly comes with an implication. We don't exactly let other fearmongering dog whistles slide just because they didn't explicitly say something like "don't even bother trying to help brown people"

Free speech isn’t equal to freedom from a response or condemnation of what you are saying, or even just the fact that you’re being counterproductive. This narrative is very prevalent in western countries and I don’t know where it comes from. It comes from the fact that you obviously feel it's right that you are able to freely advocate for your beliefs in public. I don't know how you can't see that the application of "not freedom from response" doesn't also apply to yourself, and saying that whil…

I can’t reason with people who refuse reason. Look we've all had people who are difficult to reach. But very few people outside of actual clinical psychosis are actually beyond reasoning. Your attempts were unconvincing and they ignored you. It's fine to walk away at that point, it's nice to try and help but no-one should be required to break their back if it's not working for them. You'll find thousands of talking heads on tiktok decrying the inverted standards of how if a woman sleeps with lots of partners it's seen as negative but for men it's seen as positive. I've never seen any of them comprehend that if that's the case then calling a man an incel is every bit as disgraceful as calling a woman a whore.

I think people would do a better job at communicating past their differences if they could keep a level head instead of giving in to the desire to be the main character of a dramatic narrative. When I saw "targeted" I presumed harassing DMs, threats or being chased to other threads to continue the disagreement. Countering fearmongering does require a fastidious dedication to accuracy, because people don't tend to believe anything you say after the first mistake they see. And I'm afraid your numbers are way out. In the UK where this applies, the rate of transgenderism for 16-24 is a little over 1% now. 16-34 it's more like 0.8% average. The 16-34 demo makes up ~25% of the total population. So even if ignoring all the transgender individuals <16 or >34 years old, a village of 500 people probably has easi…

If we're separating original ideal from modern usage for feminism then we should probably do the same for left and right wing. By the modern usage where left and right wing just describe the positions of the respective left/right establishment political parties, then modern usage feminism is still a firmly left-wing movement. The nominally left wing parties support it, and the nominally right wing parties treat it as antithetical. By the idealised original intent versions feminism and leftism ar…

I would even argue for just feminists. I think we've all seen male feminists who are perfectly happy to throw innocent men under a bus to get what they want. In general, I think the template should be to endeavour to remove inherent traits from the accusatory side, but you can have inherent traits on the side of the wronged if the accusation is specifically of bigotry, as identity is the actual reason why they were targeted.

The framing of that story as misogyny is just more of how so many people think of men as tools not people. It doesn't matter that they tried to help her, they didn't succeed and therefore are deserving of shame and scorn. It's petty disingenuous to put the word "recognition" in their mouth when they explicitly said it was inaccurate. Yes "recognizing" inaccurate stereotypes is a fundamental form of bigotry, why did you even need to ask? Yeah, you can't just expect society to flip from villifying men to helping them in one easy step. The first step is to disrupt groups and institutions that actively spread hate and seek to hurt men, 99% of which is done under the guise of feminism. OP is putting the cart before the horse. And you don't have hate something to fight it, but you still have to fight people who hate you if you want to protect yourself. You know the old adage about if you can't say anything nice? The same should really apply to saying something useful. If you say you can't be bothered to argue with something, then don't argue. Arguing but refusing to actually state any specifics as some bizarre performance of self-righteous indignation is more embarrassing for the people who agree with you than it is convincing to the people you're trying to browbeat.

It's such a sham that feminism will stand so firmly on abortion rights at home then suddenly turn full pro-life abortion-is-murder rhetoric when somewhere else in the world there's a chance to claw together the only modern femicide narrative. I mean fascism is a spectrum too, doesn't mean we can't judge broad ideologies for their overall impact. Very few ideologies stay monolithic, only the most brutal suppression of heterodoxy can keep an ideology from divergence. Genocide toward men is the default through out the history. Tbh I wouldn't exactly say the default, but it is historically commonplace and it's weird how little people recognize the examples for what they are. There's lots of examples in ancient history where a city/territory loses in war and the civilian men are systematically slaughtered whilst the women and children are just taken captive, like the cities of Melos or Hysiae.

It's not so much designed to create a reaction as it is to create or maintain a delusion. Sufficient quantity can be more effective than quality for shaping people's perceptions, so as long as they can keep sending out 100 unsourced claims like this to every 1 sourced and validated rebutal, many people will still internalize the unsourced claims more.

There is no "nature" to a social construct. It's whatever you define it to be, and how well that aligns with actual nature is incidental. ... Yeah, that was my point. They are individuals who just happen to be guys. OP wanted to take traits that are traditionally male gendered and eradicate them, which isn't getting rid of gendered expectations it's just inverting them so now the sports and fitness bros would be ostracized instead. Instead of ignoring the expectations and just letting people pick their preferences, even if they were the expected ones.

Masculinity is an act or performance. That would be performative masculinity. And yes everyone could do without being forced into that. But guys who genuinely just like to lift weights or play competitive sports/games are not going to take kindly to being told their preferences need to be eradicated just because they happen to align with a social construct. I don't think empathy fatigue is about too many different types of empathy, but too much volume. E.g. Supporting and empathising one person you know with suicidal thoughts is tough, but supporting ten is even more emotionally taxing, to the point that you might not have the same capacity available for each individual as you would for the lone one. that is just not how empathy works. Nah, empathy fatigue is a real, recognised thing. I mean from what I understand empathy isn't exactly zero-sum, but it does have an opportunity cost. The correlation could still be real if it weren't inherently causative. Say for example if somewhere in the late twentieth century society started to specifically punish men for being masculine, which in turn pushed them to isolation and coping mechanisms. I've seen plenty of instances within the workplace. 2/2 female managers at one workplace who would both constantly egg each other on to get more and more overtly sexist, doing things like immediately singling out all the men as suspects for a workstation left dirty because "men just can't clean properly" or unironically saying things like "I don't want to be sexist but [men are no good at finding things, etc.]" Also saw on the inside of a few hiring decisions to see them stop just a hair short o…

Ignoring the debate on the breadth of the definition of patriarchy you are using if somehow all power is in the hands of patriarchs. Whatever for now. If it's an just umbrella term with no direct relation to causative factors, it seems disingenuous to choose that term instead of naming the specific factor that's the problem? To continue your analogy, it's like finding out the pope abused kids and telling some random protestant delivering donations to a food bank that "Christians molest kids". It…

99.9999999% of the men oligarchs have killed were not their sons. 99.9999999% of fathers are not mass murdering sociopaths. Why on earth would you consider the two terms interchangeable?

Ah yes, the far right approach to statistics "There's no discrimination, they're just more lazy/stupid/violent". Apparently if you're bigoted against men it's like having a religious exemption from having to follow the golden rule of treating others how you demand to be treated.

I think they're intertwined insomuch as they both share a lot the same base character assumptions about groups, like all the ones you identified. I don't think they're intertwined in a causative sense. In that I think someone can be habitually misandrist without necessarily being habitually racist and vice versa.

I suspect the quality declined steeply when he started talking about things outside of his area of expertise. Peterson allegedly spent over a week in an induced coma to ride out the constant seizures during his extreme benzo rehab. Part of me sometimes wonders if the effect of that essentially amounted to a TBI for him, since that's kinda around the time he started losing the plot. If so it's an absolute tragedy that he's now stuck trying to fill the shoes of the concise, intelligent man he used…

I think the "gender wars" were an opportunity for the ruling elites to capitalize on and push further, not some grand scheme engineered by them from the begining. And if it didn't originate entirely from elite interference, there's still something there that needs to be fixed alongside removing the elites' power structures, not just ignored. And to me if you're still just talking about divides within the left instead of divides within the entire working class, you're not there with the kind of u…

Yeah, the power of voting does not end exclusively at getting your candidate to the top of the podium. Every demonstrable ounce of public support they get still gives their positions more leverage even out of office. That said, giving political strategists more data to work with doesn't mean they will necessarily move to help you more effectively, only manipulate you better. You still have to hope they're going to bring the carrot more than the stick

I know that really this broadly applies to most modern political strategy opinion posts, not just ones about men. But there's something incredibly dismissive about the "how do we get X votes?" posts that basically conclude "throw them these specific crumbs that they poll disproportionately high on and no-one else will get too mad about". Without even approaching the idea of needing to actually philosophically engage with why they poll that way or the validity of that group's complaints.

I think the cultural bias is probably the bigger obstacle to men's solidarity. It's usually guys who have beat the systemic barriers but have a small tight-knit social circle that I find most often are agreeable to the idea of male comradeship right now. But guys with a broad, shallow social support network, or anything remotely public facing in their professional life protest the loudest against it. I imagine the examples of the visciousness with which the mainstream culture turns on any percei…

It's not a negative conclusion about you, it's just a simple statement of fact. You wanted advice, challenging the preconceptions is the advice, terse though it may have been. Yeah you might want quicker or smoother results, but sometimes even the best solutions take a significant amount of time and effort. There isn't always a magic answer that will get people who are deeply entrenched in their ideological position to instantly flip to yours. At best you can hope to challenge them in a way that…

I guess the part where you started with "I disagree" to the person saying it's better to replace feminism with egalitarian. I read it like you tried "saying that I dont identify as a feminist" once and got a negative reaction, and were now suggesting ingratiating yourself to the people hostile to the term instead by using their preferred lingo.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates23/09/24 11:39 AM

So we should call ourselves feminists to mold ourselves to better fit ignorant people's preconceptions? Egalitarian is objectively the more accurate label, I don't think abandoning the term on account of some people's uncritical prejudices is the right move. It's been over twenty years of feminism being actively hostile to the term egalitarian, and at no point have egalitarians as a whole been the patriarchal bugbears feminists tell each other they are. Yet the myth persists anyway. You won't br…

Yeah, incels are by and large harmless. That's also possibly why some are so opposed to allowing them any independent gratification. For every incel that loses his mind and does something terrible, there are probably 10,000-100,000 others who are just easy pickings ready and willing to throw all their efforts and resources at anyone over the slightest bit of parasocial interaction. And I think some people like those odds

That’s because boys in the United States still face a very narrow set of expectations about what it means to “be a man” — and one of these expectations is that “real men” shouldn’t appear overly concerned with the daily hard work of being a conscientious student. That's right, their diagnosis is that young straight boys are all 100% masculine which apparently also means think they're too cool for school, and gay young boys won't touch masculinity with a ten foot poll, so they don't slack off. Th…

No, you don't reveal the base rate by changing the conditioning. You have to establish the base rate by other means, but by knowing the base rate you can then begin to quantify the conditioning rather than just qualify it. And saying you can't quantify red because red is a social construct is a pithy sophistry. It's an EM wave within a specific range of wavelengths that activates specific cone cells in the retina. You can measure it directly neurologically as well as you can by simple Q&A pollin…

I'm talking neutral in terms of net outcome. E.g. If you could somehow hypothetically poll a significant population of completely unsocialized adults about their favorite color and you find out ~15% choose red. Then you go poll some socialized populations: One society that conditions extremely positively for red as a favourite colour has 40% stating red as their fave, a society that has strong negative conditioning has only 2% still staying they like red, and a society that has some positive con…

I see it pretty frequently. If you absolutely need me to hand you proof on a platter, I can try and find a recent video that serves as a solid example. Anyone should know this video does not count as evidence Aside from the fact that a lot of social media engagement is artificially inflated, lots of people don't do what they "should" do, and there's really only so much repeating yourself can do about that. Aside from the fact that two actions by two kids is obviously not sufficient a sufficient number to draw any generalized conclusions from, even if we assume those actions are by pure coincidence repr…

Social conditioning and growing up aren't remotely synonymous. Social conditioning is a community feedback system that incentivizes certain behaviours by socially ostracizing or raising up people depending on what they do. Growing up is realizing you are your own person and able to decide what is right and wrong for yourself instead of having to be conditioned into it.

As a black man it can get confusing in the black community. I constantly here black feminists say black men should protect black women, or hold bad men accountable. There is a lot of violence and hypermasculinity in Rap sub genres like Gangsta Rap and Drill music. Since certain genres of Rap music tend to promote ideas polite society would considered toxic masculinity or misogynistic. But black men who call this out are often label racist, anti black, or the C slur. Now this is the blunt version…

These people weren't a different species or something. They were the same kind of people as you or me - which seems to suggest that, absent societal conditioning, men tend to be a lot more bisexual than we'd otherwise think. One sticking point with that is that your example of Ancient Greece isn't really "absent social conditioning", it in fact had very positive conditioning towards homosexuality between men. Even your own examples show some of it: A cadre of exclusively gay men were held up as …

To the Hassanabi thing, yeah, it's like another facet of frat-boy gay chicken, it's "feminine chicken". It's played tongue in cheek and the intent isn't to celebrate being actually feminine it's just a stunt to prove that you're so overtly masculine that you can do some superficially feminine things ostensibly for a good cause and still no-one will question that you're masculine. That's why the response is "wow, he's so secure in his masculinity" not "wow, he's way more feminine than I thought" …

I saw a video by a detransitioned guy recently who said one of the most revealing insights on masculinity he has gained from the process is the difference between loneliness and solitude. He also would (I presume) consider himself more feminine than average personality wise, hence how he first got lead down the path to transitioning in a troubled childhood. But that learning not to automatically mistake isolation for loneliness and it's ok to claim ownership of and be comfortable in that solitud…

People tend to make more mistakes when they're operating at their limits. It might be worth a quick self-audit if you're getting enough downtime rest and looking after your health properly.
