Sending all the love and positivity your way. ❤️ Healing from a break-up is hard at the best of times, but well done for treating yourself a little. You deserve it. I’m sure next Valentines will be 1000% better.

He may have gotten some bad advice. A lot of guys are told by their friends to ‘round up’, as a lot of women have a preference for 6’ and over. HOWEVER, just because you get bad advice, it doesn’t mean you have to take it. I agree that the lie is a red flag so I wouldn’t pursue this further. You may be tempted to let him know that the lie is the reason you don’t want to go further, but then it’s tricky because he will correct the behaviour but not for the right reason. And if he is a habitual li…

I’ve had a similar thing where I feel like men are trying to mold me to the things they like through gift-giving. It’s like they’ll kid themselves that I like something that I’m maybe only a little into, because they like it on me (if that makes sense). For instance, being bought video games. I had a guy buy me a horror game because I’m into horror movies, but I hate games and have no patience with them. He was the gamer, not me but he was convinced he could ‘find the right one to change my mind…

You’re absolutely right about the anatomy thing. They have no clue the toll it takes on a woman’s body - and worse, most of them don’t want to know! Either because they’re ‘squeamish’ or they don’t care. I’m often disheartened by the way men treat their pregnant partners. And they always seem to have some superwoman co-worker whose body “snapped back within a month - one week after the birth she was back at the gym!”. Fucking spare me. 🙄 (NB: No hate to the woman at all, but men tend to oversimp…

This is heart-breaking, I’m so sorry that he did that to you and that such a rotten piece of shit wormed his way into your life. I hope you’ve had plenty of love and support since. This can be such a hard thing to recover from, especially when coercion is involved (I spent years blaming myself for my rape), but I’m wishing you all the best and great, outstanding things for your future. ❤️

This is something that shocked and disappointed me once I was an adult. I didn’t realise how unusual it was that my parents tackled Christmas together as a team. My Dad plans and cooks the entire Christmas meal (a big affair at our house - multiple people and courses), knowing that it’s the kind of thing that stresses my Mum out. I think our Christmases were better, even as clueless kids, because our parents could both enjoy them and our Mum wasn’t on the brink of tears all day from carrying the…

I know many women who struggle with their mental health who still manage to meet their responsibilities. They keep up their hygiene, keep a reasonably clean home and show up for their kids and at work. If men with mental health issues lapse, they often have a partner to pick up the slack. It makes me angry that women with mental health issues often don’t have the luxury - even if they’re married or in a relationship. The bulk of household and child rearing tasks are still theirs to carry. I have…

Because having him around is such a joy, I’m sure. 🙄 He should contribute to the rent because he takes up space and should want to make things easier on his girlfriend. What worries me is that it sounds like he’s already moved in. Surely this should have all been decided and worked out beforehand, because it will be tricky for her to turf him out now. He could pull the whole "But I don’t have anywhere to gOOoOoOoo" routine for months. Hope she kicks him to the curb ASAP. That’s not a partner - t…

Sent me a (bad) topless photo - unprompted mind you - and wrote: "How could you be attracted to this?" I never said that I was. 🙄 The same guy also had his friend message me off his phone and demand that I sleep with him. Even pick-me me knew to cut contact immediately.

The scrotacity here is unreal. 🤢 What good could he have possibly thought would come from making that and showing it to you? Utter degenerate - I’m so sorry you were in contact with such an utter weirdo.

If Ernest Hemingway is his hero, drop him fast. Ditto for Jack Kerouac, Philip Larkin, Allen Ginsberg (used to like him, but his campaigning for the age of consent to be lowered was a big yikes for me), F. Scott Fitzgerald... So many trash writers that are still lauded as Gods for exploiting the women in their lives, drinking themselves to oblivion, and being big old misanthropes. Swerve the hard-drinking pseudo-intellectuals that idolise these men and call any book written by a woman 'chick lit…

It's great so far! I sometimes even use it on things I could probably open without it, just because it's so quick! :') I can't read the brand, unfortunately, as it was in Japanese, but it's a bright yellow, triangular thing from the store KENJI. It's a chain in the UK, but not sure if they're worldwide. However, according to a friend of mine, they're a really common appliance in East Asian homes, so I'm sure you'd be able to find a similar one!

I'm going to be living alone shortly once my LVX moves out. A couple of people have asked what I'm going to do about jars, but I just refer them to the £1 gadget I got from a Japanese home goods store. It opens all sizes of jars, has a bit for getting at pull tabs, so you don't break your nails as well as a bottle opener. If all a man contributes to the household is his ability to open jars, I've got some bad news for them...

That makes me so sad. She didn't even think she was worth being gifted a spa day? I wonder if he venmo'd her knowing she would send it back. He should have bought a non-returnable gift certificate and made SURE she would go. I have a very lovely friend, who I know when she is given gift cards and things like that, will always spend them on her daughter - or at MOST will spend the majority of it on her daughter and then get herself a small something. Now I know to just straight up buy her a gift,…

I think this movie gave one of the most real depictions of grief I've ever seen. When she's just screaming in her boyfriend's lap, and the way the grief keeps coming up for her and is used to cut between scenes abruptly - it was really spot on. And, unfortunately, the boyfriend wanting out and then sticking around due to Dani's grief, but still being cold and unfeeling towards her. Man, I have been there, and it makes everything so much worse. But of course, in real life, he'd get all the praise…

I love this comment. I sometimes get shit from people about being a horror fan and a feminist, but the fact is that although early slasher movies could be pretty misogynistic, around the 90's there was this huge shift where women who would have been victims used their wits to fight back. The genre is still problematic to a point, but I'd argue that most Hollywood movies are. The majority of horror movies these days easily pass the Bechdel test, centre women as protagonists (and men often as perp…

Bob Vance was super caring towards Phyllis. One of my favourite moments is when she admits to Dwight (when he's hammering her back) that she's afraid Bob is sleeping with the new secretary, but then once she's said it out loud she laughs because she realises how silly it is. It was cute and understated and that's how secure everybody should feel in their relationship / marriage.

I'm only 2 episodes (maybe 3?) into Mad Men and their daughter's birthday party really upset me. I'm not sure I'll continue to watch. I just feel like Betty tried so hard to do everything right - being a great hostess, a doting mother, and even trying to be kind to Helen who she is obviously very wary of. And she has a husband who resents her and disappears halfway through the party without returning with a cake - after cheating on her twice within 3 episodes! I feel like part of the point is th…

But...booze (I'm assuming it was alcohol) costs money?? Whereas the food is an investment of time - you can make pretty nice dishes with fairly cheap ingredients! My head hurts... Also, underemployed sounds different to unemployed. Are the women being punished for having more success than the men? But I bet if it were the other way round, the men would get a pass because 'their jobs are sooo stressful!'.

Well done. I know it's not always easy - especially when it's work-related or with a group you'll keep meeting, but laying down the law might stop them from continuing with other unequal behaviours. Wishing you luck!

Wishing you all the love and support in the world. Your goal of becoming a social worker is really amazing - we need strong, kind people in that line of work who know what it is to go through hard times. You will do incredible things. ❤

For me, when I think of toxic masculinity I think of sudden acts and expressions of aggression. Men throwing things, breaking things, doing that weird growl/shout of frustration. I truly can't tolerate it - it makes me feel so unsafe and even when my exes have known that, they continue to do it. I don't know if I'll ever be able to be in a relationship with a man again, because I just can't tolerate it. Having to live in a house with broken appliances and walking on eggshells. Every drawer in my…

Christ - are you in a safe position to call that out? It's so unfair - drinks are a no-effort purchase, but a side dish (to me) implies something homemade, which could take hours of extra prep - on top of the fact that most women put more effort into their pre-party routine than men do!

Out of the dozens of time men have spoken to me at the gym, only one time has it been a positive thing. Normally they were trying to hurry me off the weight machines or try and strike up conversation (like, buddy - I am soaked through with sweat and grunting. Clearly I don't wanna shoot the shit with you). The one good time was a bodybuilder who came over and (though it was unsolicited), did give me legitimately good advice on my form and in a supportive, non-patronising way. He was a PT and bas…

This is such a glorious goal. Imagine being able to have things compartmentalised so nicely! Gym room, reading room, maybe an office - that is the dream! The only thing I was thinking was that it could be a lot of upkeep, having to clean so many rooms as a single person, but god knows that even women with a husband and kids in a house that size are probably tackling the whole thing themselves. And at least you'll only be cleaning up your own mess! Wishing you all the luck in achieving this goal.

Congratulations! You did something incredible - a lot of people in this world choose every day to take poor treatment in order to have (honestly pretty crap) companionship. Good for you for stepping out and doing something for yourself! Depending on COVID restrictions where you are, would you consider having friends or family round to celebrate? This is a super-significant milestone, and it could be good to take some time to acknowledge it. It might help a little with the fear you've been feelin…

Ghibli movies are on another level when it comes to representing women and girls as heroines. Sophie is incredible throughout - although I'm not sure if Howl started to fall in love with Sophie as an old woman. There's a moment where she's sleeping in the castle and he sees her as a young woman, just with her silver hair - and he always seems aware that she's under some kind of spell. I'd love it if that were the case though, and it often bothers me with stories about hundred-year-old vampires l…

Love this. This is exactly the sort of kindness that's worth showing in this world. Uplifting other women and ourselves is a much better use of time and energy than doing life admin and cleaning up after just some dudeTM.

I think this is something that's really not talked about much. I know one really young woman who got cheap breast implants in Turkey to turn herself into Reddit's ideal big tiddy goth GF. Her OnlyFans (on the surface) is thriving, but the cost of all the make-up clothes, lighting, and fillers must be taking the lion's share. Also, since she began she's had to do more and more extreme things - even getting her partner involved and having sex on-camera. Everyone thinks it's great that she's making…

No problem! :) It's hard, you almost don't realise it's such a habit until somebody makes you take notice of it. Or less of a habit and a knee-jerk reaction. If I can help somebody, I'll normally offer to do it without even considering the impact it could have on me. You end up haemorrhaging time, effort - sometimes even money, just because it's a compulsion to try and help. With real friends it doesn't need to be a problem, because they'll reciprocate or refuse the offer. But God help you when …

I spent some time in therapy for my depression and was confronted with some very harsh truths - pre-FDS. My therapist was great at doling out tough love and pin-pointed within a couple of sessions that I was a chronic people-pleaser, due to a history of bullying and a sometimes fraught home environment. I learned to disregard my own needs, be hyper-vigilant of other people's moods (particularly anger) and the most important thing in my life was having someone that loved me. I felt like I always …

It would depend on the question I think, and how it's phrased. If the question is reasonable and something she'd be happy to answer, I don't necessarily see a problem with answering, but I wouldn't volunteer too much information and definitely would shut it down if it gets into bad territory (e.g. "Why should I pay for dinner when you're clearly more well off than me?"). Questions like "How did you afford a place like this?" are trickier, because a lot of millennials have a hard time getting on …

Ah, I understand. :) I'm sure you've done some good vetting, but I'd be careful not to share too much so early on. Perhaps as things come up, you can let him in on certain things if you feel it's necessary, but I wouldn't volunteer information he doesn't need to know. Personally, I think the only time to let a partner know everything about my finances would just before we were married. People can behave in strange and disappointing ways when money is involved - but it sounds like you're being mi…

Within 3 months, I don't know that you necessarily need to tell him the extent of it beyond what he can see. I can understand discussing your own finances after a while, as perhaps you want to budget for a holiday together or something. But are the details of your family's wealth really any of his business? I don't know. I can see certain things coming up as they're easy to see (the house for example), but don't feel you have to divulge everything to somebody just because you're in a (quite new)…

I've always been dead set on adopting or fostering, as my Dad and Auntie were both adopted. Now growing up and talking to my friends, so many of them do feel pressured to stay in relationships that aren't good because they've spoken about kids, or are worried about breaking up with their partner and missing out on their "peak fertility years". There are definitely unique challenges with adoption, and it isn't for everybody, but I am thankful that I've never had to worry too much about my biologi…

If you feel comfortable, I'd love to see you post the song you wrote! :) There's such a gap in the market for truly empowering songs written and performed by women. It struck me a while ago that while women have arguably dominated the pop scene since the 2000's, almost all the really popular songs are about relationships or lamenting break-ups. Even when women have a voice, the focus is somehow still on men. Although I don't mind songs about finding yourself through a break-up, like "thank u, ne…

100% THIS. ^ There's so little consideration of women that I can already guess that the women's toilets will be dirty - one of the stalls used as a storage cupboard, more than likely and in the 21st Century - NO SANITARY TOWEL BINS. Never mind being the norm - how is this even an acceptable date spot?? I agree - a nice wine bar or cocktail place is at least a little more inviting, but then you know that scrotes will complain about the cost because they can't get their usual £2 pint of piss. nomo…

I'm so sorry to hear this. I think mothers are so often the ones behind the camera, trying to get people to take a photo. It makes me feel so awful now that I used to moan and complain and say I hated having my picture taken when she was just trying to capture family moments. It balanced out a little because my Dad legitimately hates having his photo taken so would sometimes get behind the camera, but she was still normally the one taking photos and corralling us all into frame. Your post inspir…

The alcohol and hook-up first date template is sadly still the norm in the UK too. Everybody's parents met in the pub, had the majority of their dates at the local pub - some even have their wedding receptions there. Pub culture is so entwined with dating here, men are astonished if you suggest anything else.

This is the absolute death knoll for me in a relationship. Violent behaviour is still violent when it's directed at objects rather than your body. I'm not tolerating it again. My most recent ex screwed up some of my doctor forms and a pack of postage stamps because he was annoyed that I'd left them on the dining table where they 'didn't belong'. I was livid and I let him know. Never have I destroyed somebody's property because I'm mildly irritated at them - and that was small fry compared to wha…

Ugh, that show hurts my soul. The worst is when they take their groomsmen away for a weekend stag do, and leave the bridal party at home with some packets of crisps and a stripper that nobody wants. Getting the dress slightly wrong I could understand (it's not right, but to a lot of men one white dress is identical to another), but when they do outright spiteful and unfair things to their brides, I just can't believe the weddings end up going ahead.
