Ugh same! I remember being scared to do anything at all cause my guy “friends” would sexualize me any chance they got. And when they’d get called out they’d make me feel weird about it by saying/doing the same thing to one of their male friends and say “See? It’s not weird.” Never having guy friends again.

Yikes. I was once this friend. I was super naive about men. I was 3 years younger than him in college and it turned out he had a crush on me for years (even while he had a girlfriend). He would flirt with me or touch me all the time. Anytime I felt uncomfortable, he would just gaslight me. What a creepy sad man. I was just genuinely so blind and didn’t want to believe that men were like that. Thought we had a genuine friendship. But now I just feel used and I wish I was never friends with him. I…

Also, your response is troubling me a little bit. I kinda wanna break it down and understand it more. You’re basically saying “Women have more options than men. Women have more emotional support. This is why men commit suicide.” Or at least that’s how I understood it. Let’s assume that your observation is correct, women do have more options in dating. Why do you think this is? Do you think it is due to biological differences and men (the lower parental investing sex via sperm) having to compete …

I get what you mean. I’m assuming you mean loneliness and rejection (not lack of sex hahaha) can cause depression, which I can see. The idea that woman aren’t into hook ups isn’t true. Casual sex just typically revolves around male pleasure and orgasm. Women in relationships orgasm more frequently than in hook-ups. There was a study that many people love to bring up where women and men were asked for sex, and most men accepted while most women rejected the offer. The conclusion often made is tha…

I don’t think the things you said about the dick-zone are true. Even if they agree to continue being friends with you after you turn them down, they usually keep being a little flirty with you and you notice random glances they give you and little things they do. It becomes uncomfortable.

Exactly. It’s not a dick measuring contest on which is worse by any means. But I think it is important to recognize that it sucks for both parties, which socially we aren’t doing right now. We tend to only focus on the pain of the person who was friend-zoned.

Well I really don’t think that’s true. As long as there’s open communication like I said and you’re vocal if/when you start to develop any romantic feelings, you could redirect those romantic feelings and keep your friendship. I haven’t been able to keep a completely platonic relationship with a man so far though, so you may be right; but I really wanna try out this method and see if it’s possible. I really miss having guy friends. :-(((

Thanks for asking! They explain it in the podcast if you wanna listen to two relationship therapists discuss it. It’s not necessarily worse, I wasn’t trying to use absolute language. It CAN be worse. Getting dick-zoned sucks because you think that the guy actually enjoys your personality, hanging out with you, and that you are cultivating a fun, meaningful friendship based on that. Then it turns out the only reason he was hanging out with you was because he wanted to have sex with you the entire…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
