Back in the day democratic socialist still meant communist, just through "democratic" means. Anyway, if you know what democracy actually stands for and if you read some more of Orwell's writings, you'll notice that by democratic socialism he meant the sort of thing that he witnessed in Spain, which is democratic as opposed to the dictatorial "socialism" of the USSR. I would argue that the Spanish Revolution was the most succesful and genuine libertarian communist revolution in history.

Nah, the spectrum of acceptable discussion in modern politics is so restrained exactly because of neoliberal ideological hegemony. "Ideology" defined as a dogmatic set of ideas is also a product of ideology itself, and it used to have a different meaning.
