Umm, if memory serves, Will Smith became the butt of jokes and had his reputation destroyed over that incident - not Chris Rock. But by all means, don’t let that get in the way of your moral preening.

Thanks to America’s uniquely idiotic strain of the just-world fallacy - the demented Calvinist belief that success/failure is a reflection of God’s judgment - most people can’t get it through their heads that you don’t have to necessarily do anything “wrong” to fail. Also, if we’re being real, there’s a significant percentage of women online who get a kick out of mocking lonely/low-status men. It’s the same impulse behind manosphere types mocking fat chicks and baby mamas.

Perfectly said. It’s just amazing how so many people continue to conflate character with attractiveness, even though plenty of empirical evidence suggests the two are largely unrelated.

We are irredeemably stupid as a species. You ain’t wrong!

The just-world fallacy is indeed deeply ingrained in us, which is all the more reason we have to aggressively fight it and call it out at every opportunity. Not just in terms of dating/sex, but also the economy and broader society. Once we realize that nobody really “deserves” anything, for better or worse, our culture will become a lot kinder and more reasonable.

And on the flip side, I’ve also seen people imply that lonely men must have rotten character. Otherwise, they surely would have found a relationship by now. This just-world mindset needs to be completely and utterly destroyed on both sides.

Absolutely. This applies to everything, not just dating. In the words of Captain Picard of all people, “it is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life.”

As others have noted, such women were probably not into a guy in the first place. Attraction cannot be negotiated. While this may sound harsh, if anything this truth should make men feel less bad about dating setbacks. Dating is not some fair or rational meritocracy, and getting rejected doesn’t necessarily mean you did anything “wrong.” I know I’ve said this before, but the sooner you abandon the just-world fallacy when it comes to dating, the less bitter you’ll feel.
/r/PurplePillDebate31/01/24 04:36 PM

Definitely the latter. It’s one of those life milestones you’re supposed to eventually achieve. As Rust Cohle in True Detective would say, it’s part of our programming. I doubt most people truly appreciate the sacrifice and duty that marriage entails.
/r/PurplePillDebate30/01/24 05:46 PM

I mean, I’d take podcasts like these with a grain of salt. If all men knew about women was from watching Whatever or Fresh & Fit, they’d think most women are early 20s OnlyFans creators.

They would say “but unlike healthcare or living wages, getting laid isn’t a right!” To which I say, fair enough. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t still pursue societal solutions to loneliness, which affects a huge swathe of American society and goes beyond dating/sex. In a society with less work/hustle, more leisure time, better public transit/less car-dependent sprawl, better public spaces, and on, everyone would be happier; and it would probably be easier to date. Or if we can’t do that, we…

Exactly. Human beings are different in terms of temperament, upbringing, and so on. Just because certain talented and focused individuals can overcome the odds and succeed doesn’t mean people should expect everyone else to follow suit. “If I can do it, so can you!” is more often than not just self-flattery and mean-spiritedness disguised as inspirational advice.

I’m not a fan of the RP either. Both RP and BP have their own moronic versions of the just-world fallacy.

My problem with self-improvement is that it’s simply unrealistic on a macro level. Are there specific individuals who can improve themselves and enjoy greater dating success? Absolutely. Likewise, there were individuals who managed to overcome all the odds and bootstrap their way to economic success during the Great Depression. (And interestingly enough, one major self-help classic - Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People - was written during the Depression. Make of that what yo…

^ This I’d be more receptive to BP self-improvement rhetoric if it didn’t inevitably devolve into just-world fallacy BS and conflate character with attractiveness. EDIT: It’s just funny seeing BPers - who otherwise align with social justice politics - become meritocratic bootstrappers when it comes to dating. I think RPers are full of shit when it comes to self-improvement too, but at least it aligns more with their socially darwinistic ideology.
/r/PurplePillDebate23/01/24 02:15 PM
23

Yes, exactly. The problem is that many people - including, ironically, RPers - have internalized this whole “women are wonderful” belief. But maybe, just maybe women attracted to shitty men are themselves shitty.

The best thing to ever happen to me was discovering the just-world fallacy and why it’s BS. Once I realized that dating isn’t a fair meritocracy, I stopped feeling resentful and bitter over certain onerous dating dynamics. If only other people got the memo and stopped acting like dating success (or lack thereof) reflects on people’s character.

Because it takes very little skill or effort for a woman to land a man. There’s just nothing really impressive about it.
/r/PurplePillDebate28/12/23 10:15 PM

I just don’t like double standards. Any time I hear a woman denounce “slut shaming,” my immediate question then becomes, “what do you think of older male virgins?” In other words, do they really believe that body count doesn’t matter, or are they just upset that they’re being judged for it?

Think of it like a job interview. Are you going to bluntly tell the interviewer that you want the job just so you can pay your bills and have health insurance? Of course not. You’re going to concoct some phony, enthusiastic explanation about how passionate you are about customer service, their product, the company’s mission, etc.
/r/PurplePillDebate13/12/23 06:16 PM

So in other words, if certain redpilled men did a better job of hiding their “bitter, angry resentful attitudes” and putting on a good act, their views wouldn’t hinder their dating prospects?
/r/PurplePillDebate04/12/23 11:59 PM

In the long run, yes, people can either improve themselves to become more attractive or lower their standards. However, when it comes to one specific individual of the opposite sex, attraction is not negotiable. If he/she isn’t into you, then they’re not into you. Men not recognizing this can lead them astray, either in terms of being unduly bitter or not knowing when to back off.

You mean attraction is negotiable?

Wasn’t trying to get too personal, but recently one of my pet peeves has become people on the Internet either telling other people on the Internet to “touch grass” or make observations about the general social backwardness of people on the Internet.

I think what particularly angered the men in your post was your claim that “what scares us off is a bitter, angry, resentful attitude” - implying that women are mind readers who can magically detect toxicity in men. (Which, in turn, prompts many men to ask why, if that’s the case, do so many women date/marry genuinely abusive and violent men. What happened to their amazing mind-reading skills?) Also, maybe this is just me being wary, but most people offering “advice” on the Internet are just bei…

Thank you for this! Yes, there’s nothing wrong with self-improving, but do it for yourself, not because of this (mistaken) American bootstrapping mentality that engaging in self-improvement will naturally result in external rewards.
/r/PurplePillDebate30/11/23 03:48 AM

Someone needs to coin a clever name for a law of the Internet, which posits that whenever someone online tells other netizens to “touch grass,” they themselves are terminally online and need to touch grass. But putting that aside, while certain red pill/other pill theories may be esoteric to the general population, it’s not just a few overly negative online types who are struggling. America is experiencing a very real loneliness epidemic, at least if our surgeon general is to be believed. Social…

Agreed. If you want to learn how to be a great chef, don’t ask a food critic; ask an actual chef. A member of the opposite sex giving dating advice is akin to a food critic. They may know what they like, but they know nothing of the effort and skill required to create the end product.

I don’t think most people are necessarily shitty. I’d say most people are fundamentally decent with a mix of good and bad behavior, and how well they behave is influenced by societal incentives. Only a minority of people are genuinely evil. Ditto for truly selfless and virtuous individuals.

I remember when Ana Kasparian from the The Young Turks did a story on Caroline Ellison - SBF’s former girlfriend and crypto partner in crime - and anticipated red pill arguments that Ellison’s romance with SBF is proof that women like toxic men. As she pointed out though, Ellison herself was toxic and screwed up in the head. I think the reason red pillers are so angry over certain women being attracted to bad boys is because they were raised with a romanticized, idealistic view of women. However…

^ This It’s the same reason manosphere types enjoy making fun of fat women and single moms/baby mamas. While some of them are undoubtedly entitled vis-à-vis dating, cruelty is its own reward for many people. Ditto for snarky women who mock incel types. Sure, a lot of those men are toxic and entitled, but that’s not the real reason they enjoy mocking them. American culture in general has a big appetite for cruelty, and loves to deride “losers” and kick them while they’re down.

I wouldn’t be surprised, but bots or no bots, the rancor is all too real - which our culture doesn’t exactly discourage, sadly.

Very well said yourself! A good example is George Floyd and the antiracist activism it inspired. Even though the cause is fundamentally just, it’s been abused by grifters like Ibram X Kendi and certain BLM leaders, which in turn makes people increasingly suspicious of the cause itself.

All due respect, that’s not a reasonable expectation to have of human beings in general. As Dale Carnegie noted decades ago in his classic How to Win Friends and Influence People, most of us are naturally allergic to accountability and criticism.

Because we live in a brutally competitive, hyper-capitalist society that pits people against one another and is zero-sum by nature. Unsurprisingly, this mindset bleeds into social and cultural issues. Plus, elites have an incentive to keep different identity groups at each other’s throats; keeps people’s attention away from their obscene wealth.
/r/PurplePillDebate09/11/23 07:33 PM

Yeah, any man with a modicum of experience with online dating gets good at picking up on certain weight tells. (Ie. Lack of full body pics and carefully cropped head photos).

Indeed. Americans in particular are allergic to this reality because they’re so heavily invested in the cult of personal responsibility, survivorship bias, and the whole just-world fallacy.

True. Stanford neuroendocrinologist Robert Sapolsky recently released a book that essentially argues free will is a myth. Human beings are largely a combination of genetic and environmental luck.

Like so many Americans, you seem to conflate certain hobbies and attributes with “character.” For the umpteenth time, character has nothing to do with attractiveness to the opposite sex.

So why even say that then?

“Either because if it was a decent person, he/she would have had a relationship by now.” There it is, the just-world fallacy. I am still astounded by how so many people seem to conflate character with attractiveness to the opposite sex. Newsflash: Plenty of terrible people with rotten character have no trouble finding sex or romance. Meritocracy isn’t actually real, whether it’s the economy or even in dating.

Pretty much. What both incels and their snarky feminist critics get wrong is that they apply the just-world fallacy to dating. The former think the reason they can’t get any is because women are vapid and shallow, and the latter think incels’ bad character is why they’re lonely in the first place. The truth is, there’s no link between character and attractiveness to the opposite sex, at least not initially - and that applies to both sexes. This should be obvious - and I posit that it would make …
