I don't think it's a bad idea to engage these people on fb and call them out, that's up to the individual. But I do feel strongly that these fb screen cap posts contribute nothing of value to this subreddit at all other than "look, some person somewhere in the world is ignorant and posted on the internet" and detracts from actual serious content and discussion that can/should be occurring here.

I posted this on the discussion board for my gender studies course. The professor replied and responded, in a rather long winded and round about way, that she disagrees with his statements because he doesn't view the issue "from the sociological perspective". I had already quit taking her seriously at this point, but that was certainly another nail in the coffin.

Several hours after I posted this article (well, I took the facts and paraphrased them into a nicely worded post, rather than just posting the AVFM link) she didn't just delete my message, she shut down the whole discussion board, about a week before the quarter is fully over. Either that or she banned me from it, who knows. LOL.

In regards to this particular incident, yeah the girl is really overreacting. As far as Dan Savage's writing in general though, he HAS on many occasions said some ridiculously prejudiced and offensive things about quite a few groups of people. He almost always gets called out on it. Sometimes he apologizes, sometimes he doesn't.

Used to be. I'm a bi male as well, I've paid attention since I usually enjoy his columns except for his occasional bouts of being ridiculously ignorant or offensive. He's apparently starting to come around to the idea of bisexuality over time, but if you read his older columns, even as little as a year ago, he's said some really outrageously biphobic or bi-erasing things. And he's been called out on it, over and over, which finally seems to be having some sort of effect.

As much as I usually love AVfM, I'm going to agree with the others here that this article is pretty misleadingly titled and written. Which is a shame, since the Dear Colleague issue is an extremely important and dangerous current event that needs to be covered, but with articles like this it loses credibility.

I'm in a similar situation in a sociology/gender studies course with a hardline feminist instructor who likes to spout off blatantly false statistics or make leaps-in-logic arguments whenever it helps her cause of portraying "women = victim, men = oppressor". There's not much you can do. You're a lowly undergrad who has yet to complete their degree, they are an accomplished academic big wig. I do my part to fight back against my prof in my class by posting news articles and studies on the class …

I watched this video in my gender studies class about 2 weeks ago, actually. I agree with the majority of what he's saying except that domestic violence statistic I KNOW is bullshit. I was tempted to bring it to my teacher's attention outside of class but I know no good would come of it. She's the type of feminist who chooses to disregard any sort of point that doesn't support her existing perception of the world.

Luckily it's a class of 250 students, the only graded material is 3 multiple choice exams over the course of the quarter. There's no room for subjectivity, I just select the correct answer, (or as is often the case, the answer I know she is wanting to hear) and a computer grades it.

Here's how I view the matter, please feel free to point out any flaws in my logic. If somebody is pro-equality, they need to be a proponent of both men's and women's rights. Both sides need people to fight for them and address issues that affect one of the sexes.
