Definitely not my intent to troll. My apologies if I’ve said something that suggested I had bad intentions.

Regarding your hiring scenario, I’d like your thoughts on a recent experience I had. I make hiring decisions at my organization, and my organization is in a field overwhelmingly dominated by women - child care. The lack of men in our field is a serious problem. Our students lack exposure to male role models, our dads don’t see themselves represented in the classroom, curricular decisions often favor female students, the list goes on. We recently filled a position by hiring a young man with no ex…

Ooof, yes and no. I think equity should absolutely be the goal when we have accurate information about each person’s advantages and disadvantages in life. If we could know who genuinely needed a leg up and who didn’t, then we ought to act on that information. The problem arises when we don’t have that information… which is almost all of the time. So instead, we seem to have a choice: give everyone an equal starting point without much consideration for their individual circumstances, or, rely on …

Fortunately, this has not yet proven to be the case.

Yep, I have and it left a strong impression. Leaves me wondering how anyone goes about claiming identity to any group when extreme views come to define that group’s position. Do I attempt to redirect feminism by saying I identify as one and then model open mindedness and moderation? Or do I relinquish the identifier because others in the group have done harm by being close minded and vindictive? I’m not yet persuaded that feminism is doing more harm than good, but it’s certainly a question I wil…

Just wanted to thank everyone for their responses! I’ve not had time to reply to everyone- or even most of you- but have read as many answers as I can. I definitely feel like I have a better understanding of where many of you are coming from. I can honestly say that I generally agree with most of the responses. Though there are some responses I don’t agree with, I now better understand the thinking and emotion behind those perspectives. Thank you.

Thanks for clarifying. This makes a lot of sense.

Thanks for the summary.

How do you think their responses would differ? I’m not yet clear on the differences between these groups.

Nope, not what I’m doing. I’m taking a statement that many assume to be true, and inviting discussion around that statement. Perhaps someone will make the case that women’s “soft power” put them on equal footing with men, or that men having more power also lead to more responsibility which limited their freedom relative to women, or that only an elite cohort of men had more power but the vast majority had egalitarian relationships with women. Those responses could provoke further conversations a…

Any feminist who thinks feminism is simply “men oppress women” hasn’t done their homework. What every feminist should agree on, however, is that the patriarchy oppresses everyone. Seems like we need a mutually agreed upon definition of “the patriarchy.” Anyone want to take a stab? Is there consensus amongst MRAs regarding the idea of patriarchy?

If feminism claims to advocate for gender equality by focusing attention on the rights of women, but in doing so has put men in a position where they feel victimized/angry/scared/unseen/disrespected/unsafe/unsuccessful, then I think we’ve gone wrong somewhere. I don’t buy the argument that men will inevitably be angry/hurt because they are losing power to women. It ought to be possible for both genders to speak frankly about the unique challenges they face, the burdens they carry, so the other g…

Do you think it’s possible for feminism to be what so many want/claim it to be-a movement for gender equality? Many on this thread seem to feel that feminism has misandry at its foundation. I don’t personally agree, and think instead that any feminist whose given an ounce of thought to women’s issues should have nothing but empathy for mens issues. Seems like the enemy isn’t feminism, but instead an unwillingness to engage in critical thought (a shortcoming shared in equal proportion across both…

You say, “men need to be productive to develop self esteem because we aren’t inherently valuable in the way women are.” This statement really struck me. Could you say more? In what ways are women inherently valuable, and in ways are men not? Are not all humans inherently valuable, regardless of gender?

Thank you for the essay! Didn’t scare me off in the least. You’ve given me lots to think about. The first question that comes to mind is about the term patriarchy. I hear a lot of people on her saying that the phrase toxic masculinity is problematic, and I like your suggestion of the phrase toxic gender norms as an alternative. But with respect to the term patriarchy… do you think it exists? Has existed historically? If it does/has existed, do you think it has been harmful? Why or why not?

Great question! I meant equity according to how you define it… but now see how that word comes with a lot of baggage.

I’d love to learn more about your shift away from feminist-ally. What lead to that shift? Was there a particular moment? A slow realization?

Thank you! This is very helpful. I completely agree regarding the downfalls of the “who has it worse” Olympics. Ugh! I have a follow up question. I’m gonna lead with a statement I take to be true (and please challenge me if you disagree!): over the course of human history, men have generally had more power in society than women. If this doesn’t ring true for you, why or why not?

It’s heartbreaking to think that the pendulum has swung so far in the other direction- that those who have been harmed are now the ones inflicting harm. Sadly, so very predictably human. Do you think it would be fair to say that men and women have wronged one another equally, and therefore, have equal responsibility in working towards a solution? Or do you feel that society has tilted past this equal-harm point, and now men are more often victimized than women?

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
