I'm pretty sure it came over from Japan via anime, and if there's anything that's the complete antithesis of a red pill guy, it's a male character in most anime. With the bleeding nose and freaking out over accidentally touching girls and shit. While it's a good idea to anchor higher than your previous salary, it does present problems. You don't know what they have the authority to offer, so you risk either anchoring too low and selling yourself cheap, or anchoring too high and pricing yourself out of consideration. Changing jobs can easily result in a 50-100% salary increase; you can either try to nail that target, or just have them do it for you. Better to let them give the first number and pick it up in counteroffers.

That's a fair point, but it's still country to country in this time. It's not within one country versus same country 50 years ago, even though I'd bet it would show a similar trend. To your example, Japan in particular has a weird thing for ostentatious dedication to your job. Long hours even when there's no work, after hours mandatory socializing with coworkers, etc.
